Gas Tank question
Not sure if my tank is an original CR or not.... but anyway it is aluminum with fill pipe on the side of the tank about halfway up. I need to change the fill pipe anyway, so I'm thinking of cutting a section of my trunk out in order to have the fill pipe come in to the tank from the top. Is there some reason CR designed them to come in from the side other than trunk space? I've read a few threads about hard to fill the tank (vent crimped) with the side entrance, but any issues with a top fill? Thanks.

You could just get a block off plate for the top, and cut a new hole in the side...go to tanks inc., they have the parts..

CR never had nor used, nor made aluminum tanks.

I line the fill pipe on the tank up with the fill tube under the cap as much as I can for a straight shot and put the hole through the trunk floor to suit. I also vent the tank from the opposite side to the fill at the highest point on the tank. I have been plumbing the vent to an "n" shaped tube through the side of a tube between the cap and tank. Fuel going in draws air out of the tank with a venturi effect and it works very well.

Assuming you do have a CR tank OR one built the same way..
I think the reason for the inlet being midway up on the tank was so that it would clear the frame rail (I can't remember but I think the tube swings under the frame rail then turns up).
Bad design as once gas reaches the top of the inlet tube on the tank, there's no way for the air to escape unless there a vent tube is used (which my tank does have on top of it).
That vent tube is supposed to be tied into the gas cap as seen in this pic: (Please note that the fitting for the vent tube is not screwed in, in the pic)
I suspect people just capped off the vent tube at that tank and that is why they have problems.

Wisconsin Snake
Well said/done. The directions for this stage of the build in the manual leaved a lot to be desired! The other problem I found was that if "they" get it, they did not angle the fitting into the cap far enough and forced the vent tube to close off once it was installed in the car.

A remote breather / tipover valve is a much better idea......

Nick (Mickmate) has the tip-over valves. I have one in my car.

We/I used Fords "Roll Over" valves for their F150 Vans. I think we cut a true 3/4" hole in the top of the tank. The Ford valve came with it own sealing rubber grommet. Simply install the grommet, then the valve in the grommet and a line to the valve. Cheap and really worked well -- how ever you would have to be careful how you ran the line as you "could" end up with fumes in the car.
