'92 CR Windshield

It's me again. I have a bunch of questions that I need all the expertise I can get. I am in need of a new windshield for a '92 CR. I am assuming that they are all slightly different from on kit to the next so I want to be sure to buy the right one the first time. Any install tips are welcome as well.

From my understanding, they are all the same (which is really a good thing!), but let someone else verify first.

Yes. They are all the same. Available at numerous outlets but it seems Shell Valley has the highest quality ones.

That's great info. Thanks for the help. Does anyone have any install tips? I have read didn't things about screws that cause problems or something. Want sure what they were talking about.

I just replaced mine on my BDR. Not sure you will have the same issues as I did, but here it goes. The new glass did not fit my frame. Had to get new frame and glass. The new frame was about 1 ½ wider. The body had to be cut out a little on both sides for the support post. I was able to reuse the cover plates where the post go through the body. Spacers had to be added to the mounting points (very important). Sun visors mount differently and at a wider spacing. (may be just BDR). Check your angle of your old windshield so you can math it or make adjustment as you like. The new post are not pre drilled.

The key is not to put stress on the windshield frame when bolting the side post to the cowling. The stress will fracture the glass.

Here's one tip for you. Check the screw length on all screws that go anywhere near the glass. On my CR, I have a small crack that goes diagonal from near where the top screw on the driver side piece goes into the frame up to the top of the glass. I haven't taken it apart for a direct visual, but I'd bet the screw extends just a bit inside the frame and "touched" the glass. It doesn't take much to start a crack.

Given the crack went diagonally up to the upper glass edge instead of horizontally across the windshield, I have chosen to leave it all alone. I think the crack appeared 10 years ago and I should fix it but it's one of those things that's low priority.

When I do get around to replacing the glass, I'm going to check the length of every screw very closely.

This will trip your trigger. The screws that come with the windshield are all the same length!
The problem you will find is many, many of the windshields (Out of the frame) looks like they were cut by hand! Thus leaving a very rough edge with multiple high edges. If one of your screws goes in and just touches one of these high spots your windshield WILL crack sooner or later at the point of contact!

For what it's worth; my solution for putting in a new window is to totally remove it from the trim. (Really quite easily done) I then take a small 5" grinder with 60grit flexible disc and smooth out the entire edge. No more broken Windows. (This almost always happens with imported suppliers.)

Great tips. I have been looking at the shell valley glass and noticed for not much more they offer the frame and all. Will the frame fit the CR and if so is it with it? My frame is it decent condition.

If you buy it from Shell Valley it IS complete. Also it is PPG GLASS, therefore it is DOT approved and is buffed and polished on all edges! Excellent choice in my opinion.

I was looking at it last night, it looked pretty straight forward but wasn't sure if the glass was usually glued into the trim or not. Wanted to have all the info before attempting to replace a $500 piece of glass. Thanks for confirming!

I have never replaced or even installed a windshield but I have heard of others who had a screw make contact with the edge of the glass which will lead to a crack. I would measure twice if you know what I mean.

Replaced the glass on my CR last night. Everything went well, used a glass only kit from Finishline with no issues.
