How big did you go with your tires and rims???
I just went to a cobra event on Saturday here in Omaha. Many guys were running 315's on the rear. This was all Shell Valley and Midstates cobras. But it got me curious how big we can go on the back? I am running a 8.8 from a 87 thunderbird super coupe.
So, how big of tires and rims are you guys running, and with what rear-end?

Mid '80's vintage Mustang 8.8 posi, 3.55 gears. Also using ring gear stud girdle style aluminum rear cover. Not sure it really strengthens anything, but it looks good. Brakes are '87 - '89 T-Bird Turbo Coupe disks.
OEM Cragars were 15" x 8", with 4" backspacing. Used 17" x 9 1/2" Team III's with 5" backspacing. Tires are 275/40ZR17.

Ford 9" 3.50 same as Jack 275/40ZR17 with 5" backspacing 17/9 1/2 rims. I looked at the 315 but thought they might rub if I got just a little bit excited the 275 have a 10.4" footprint.

Glad to hear the 17 X 9 1/2 rims fit well. I picked up a set of 4 really nice wheels and tires of that dimension with 17X275X45's. I was worried about the sizing, but I may measure to see exactly how much I can fit.

I'm going to have my differential cut to allow 1.75" clearance from the inside of a 17x11 rim to the frame. I expect that a 315 tire will overhang by .5" max, leaving 1.25" clearance. Anybody know if this is enough clearance when using a panhard to control lateral position?

You need to be very careful that the offset of any wheel is correct. When going that wide you have to realize that your wheels are going to be a custom fit. Not just any old 17 x 9 1/2 is going to fit, unless you want to cut your axles, or redo your wheel flairs.

On my car, on the street, I run 275-40-17 rear and 255-40-17 front (Corvette sizes, so lot's of tire choices). I run Firestone SZ50EP's, and they are fantastic.

For the rear wheels, I could have again split the offset evenly from the stock 4" backspacing 8" wheel to a 4 3/4" backspacing for a 9 1/2" wheel. It would have worked fine. I used a 5" backspacing only because it would be easier to shim the wheel "OUT" if there are any interferences, than trying to shim the wheel "IN".
The next size up in a 15" is 10". In a 17" from Team III is 11". Not sure you need to go any larger to get traction but measure carefully if you're going after 315 - 335 tires.

17x9.5 in the front with 275/40-17 and 17x11 in the rear with 315/35-17. Backspace is 4.75" front and rear.

I have a ford 8.8 with 19X10.5 in the rear - 295/35/19 tires Fit is perfect but I wouldn't want to go any wider or it would rub.

275/40/17 in the front on 17X9.5 wheels and 335/35/17 on the rear with 17X11.5 wheels. They fit absolutely perfectly but getting the backspacing right is critical. I love the fat look from the rear of the car. Pictures in my gallery.
