CRII reference implementation question

Well, I just got my HyFire back from Mallory, who "didn't find anything wrong with it."

So ...

For a 351 motor, what does CRII put in their cars' engine bays for ignition, and where? Also, since heater core plumbing was a problem due to where I mounted my ignition box, how does CRII run the heater core hoses?

As you can see from the picture in my photo gallery, I used the old battery tray to mount the ignition box, and the old ignition module mount for the ProMaster coil. I spent some time today looking at the front of the engine bay, but didn't see any place big enough to mount the ProMaster.

One last question - how is the radiator overflow handled in a CRII? I'd love to move the current plastic tank.

Thanks,

JLW

PS - please put me on the list for 351 mounts as soon as you're up-to-speed and ready to take new orders (with instructions, please! - mine's a '92 vintage that uses the old two-piece mounts).

Thanks again,

JLW

JLW, I would start by taking all that wiring out and cut and trim everything to clean it up. The wiring for the stock harness used the Ford ignition control. There are several wires that you don't need since you are running the other system. I haven't used the system you have but I think thay are all close. The MSD I use I only need 2 wires from the Classic harness. Wire 128 which is ignition and wire 132 which is your tach signal. You can eliminate all the others. I would also read your owners manual because you may not need the ballast resistor. The other wires on the ignition box are usually to the distributor and the coil, and power from the battery. You can give me a call and I can walk you through it. The heater hoses can be attached so they come out without any interference. It looks like you can shorten them up a bit. You can also move the valve so it isn't so far down the line if your cable has enough slack. I usually run the hoses in the same spot but higher up to hide them more. There are several types of overflow tanks available. I normally use an aluminum one from Jegs and make a bracket down on the front crossmember to attach it.

The new mounts are also a 2 piece but they are 3/4" lower.

Thanks yet again!

Thanks, Don -

I actually do use the ballast resistor because I need it if (or, unfortunately, probably when) the HyFire dies again and I have to use the bypass plug.

Also, unfortunately, I think most of the wiring mess you see is part of the Mallory system - all the stock CR stuff is pretty neatly routed and bound. I do still use the stock CR harness to wire the alternator.

Could you send me a picture of a "Don Scott/CRII" engine bay with a 351? If it's not a copyright problem, I'd love to see a pro's use of available space, especially (at the moment) with the heater wiring and overflow tank, and where you locate the coil and ignition box.

Also, what is your recommended coil/ignition combination? I've been through the "we can't find anything wrong" routine too many times before to really trust the HyFire, so I'm open to swapping out. I'm running a 351 with Edel RPM heads (~10.7:1), a Torker II intake, and a Compcams 282S camshaft (.528 lift, 236@0.050 duration) that you've helped me with before.

Thanks again,

JLW

JLW, I use the MSD system and have had great luck with it. I can only think of 1 failure in the last 12 years. I use the MSD distributor, coil and a 6AL box. The wiring is a very easy hook up. Battery power, ignition, tach. The MSD 6AL comes with direct hookup wires for the coil and distributor. I don't have a good picture of the right side but this should give you an idea of how I wire them.

I forgot to mention I mount the coil to the front of the block. I use the MSD coil which is standard size. Look next to the distributor in the first picture and you will see the coil.

Now we know!
Nice trick there fella, I mean the flashlight and all really does the trick! :)

DV...Now we've got to get a bigger, brighter, more powerfull flashilight!

That's not a flashlight!!! It's a laser beam activation detector, It uses the 800ghz millenium based gogaterm frosheim based SCR. It allows the owner to zero in on all (fill in the blank).

I knew that! ;)

DV...The change is here. The change is good. The change is what was needed. It can and will be done!

Art Burtt 08-19-2003 06:37 PM

Don,
There is a better laser beam detector. It has all the properties of
the Millenium model but has been souped up with a Pentium 6 chip. Faster than a speeding bullet and more powerful than a locomotive, able to detect tall buildings in a nano second. Effective on all types of laser except those powered by Kryptonite. Fortuneately Kryptonite is in short supply. Although Ohio has equiped all of it's Smokeys with it so be careful out there!!

petek 08-20-2003 08:04 PM

Geeze, are you still using the gogaterm frosheim based SCRs? Man, everyone and I mean everyone has gone to the silicon on saphire plasma pumped TRIAC lasers with the Faraday tuned chambers!

;)

Thanks again, Don. On the red car (3rd pic) is it an MSD box that's down against the firewall? That one's got the voltage regulator in the same spot where mine's mounted. That's where I've currently got the ProMaster, and seems like a logical mount point (hopefully getting some fresh air from the louvres and scoop).

A better man than I could move the regulator to place everything like you've got in the first pictures, but I'm all too aware of my limitations in the mounting/fabrication area.

Looks like the MSD coil mounts right beside the dist - is that the Blaster coil?

Thanks again, and next time you're in the garage with a camera, could I also ask for pictures of the front of the engine bay too, to see how you handle the overflow tank?

Thanks,

JLW

PS - please put me down for one of those electro-laser frabnambulators - does it come in a color other than yellow? I'm planning to calibrate it to send me psionic mental waves when it detects imminent HyFire failure.:D

PPS - Art - thanks for the note. In your photo gallery, is the picture of your MSD box mounted on the passenger compartment side of the firewall?

PPPS - Don - will you post to the forum when you're ready to start taking part orders for engine mounts, etc.? I know you're still currently neck-deep in getting CRII to steady state. Once again, special thanks for taking time to help greenhorns like me in the middle of all that.

dscott 08-21-2003 10:17 AM

JLW, yes that is the MSD box on the firewall. The coil is next to the distributor, I use the MSD blaster 3. I'll see if I can get a picture of the overflow. I don't have any finished cars right now so maybe someone else has a picture? We are starting to unload some pallets so when I get to the mounts I'll let you know.

Pete and Art, you guys crack me up!!!
Don
