Thumbs down Fuel Injection Woes

I'm working on a Classic Roadster I started January of 2001.

I purchased a 302 from a 93 GT Mustang with the the engine wiring harness having only the necessary sensors included. That's what I was told. I had to mix and match the CR engine harness with the mustang engine harness.

When the engine is cold, it will start and run for a few seconds and then die. It will do this 3 or 4 times before it will finally continue to run. Once it is running, it runs very rich.

It has new O2 sensors, engine coolant temp sensor, with existing EGR valve, etc.

Does anyone know where to start in diagnosing the problem?

The best way to find the problem is to run the codes. You can buy a code reader at your local auto parts store for around $20 - much cheaper than just replacing parts until you find the problem. Hook it up to the connector on the wiring harness and run the key on, engine off and the engine running tests. If you have a bad sensor or solenoid somewhere, you will get a trouble code.

From your symptoms my guess would be a sticking idle control motor (the cylinder that bolts to the side of the throttle body).

Hi,
An easy check is to install a fuel pressure gauge on the fuel rail, pass side front at the schrader valve. With the key on, engine off it should be 39 lbs. with engine running at idle= 30 lbs, the vaccuum brings the pressure down.
Shut engine off, the fuel pressure should stay at 39lbs for at least 10 minutes, then slowly creep down. If the pressure falls right away you have a leak at the fuel regulator or a bad injector, either will cause a rich condition.
Good Luck,
Perry

I have run the engine codes and here's the list:

12--cannot rasie engine above normal idle.
91--EGO sensor signal voltage always indicates "lean"
35--EGR valve position sensor: signal voltaage above Self-Test specification limits

Note the egr valve is because I don't have the tab and tad relays in place at this time.
