Do I need Wipers in California?
I wasn't planning on using windsheild wipers. I'm just wondering if I need them to pass a visual inspection in California? I just want to make sure I don't go through all the work to fill the holes and smooth out the cowl just to not pass some stupid visual test.
thanks,
Jareds

I think they are required, call the Calif Highway Patrol.

i wonder, if i wasn't planning on using my mufflers, would i be able to run these open side-pipes? And if i am not planning on driving in the rain, perhaps i could use these slicks? And if i am not planning to roll the car, might i skip the roll bars and still race SCCA?
Inquiring minds want to know.
Affectionately, ;)

JaredS,
I have a friend who works for the CHP, I asked the same question of him he said they are required.

Can you run without a screen. Just use an aero screen..
Would this then negate the use or requirement of wipers being fitted...

A lot depends on the CHP officer. I had the VIN inspection at the Santa Ana office. I don't have wipers and nothing was said about it or anything else. I think he just wanted to get it over with. I'm not even sure he checked the block number unless he had a mirror.

A street driven car without windshield wipers is just asking for trouble. If you're going to put street tags on your car, most (if not all) States will fail inspection without them. Same for no defrosters. You can get away with this (if you feel foolhardy) with Antique, Classic, or Vintage tags that don't require inspection.
That being said, the stock Lucas wiper setup leaves a lot to be desired. The street rodders must have a better way of doing this.

Yea, it's called 'RainX'.
I don't have wipers on my Cobra, but the arms are in the trunk in case it would become an issue (along with the front plate etc).
RainX works really well, and makes it easier to de-splatter the bugs too.

"A street driven car without windshield wipers is just asking for trouble."
After four years of driving it in Ca. and then going thru inspection in Az with no wipers,i must be one mean guy,'cuz no-one wanted to give me any "trouble".
Also,i removed my heater/defroster/fan assembly and nothing was said.
People need to stop with generalizations and guessing when others are asking for info related to a upcoming "official encounter".

From your post, it isn't clear that you passed CA inspection without wipers. Did you, when and where?
It is certainly true that we should not generalize. But, a reasonable person would expect, in most states, to be flagged for no wipers.
i occasionally ran/run race tires on the street, but that doesn't make it safe, legal or recommended. In fact, if asked, i would advise against it. Every risk isn't for every body.
But, it's a free country and advice is also free to give, receive, dispute and/or ignore.
Doesn't automatically make us ALL trial lawyers or filibustering liberals, y'know, just because we might caution the rare restraint.
For 2¢, plain.

Sorry, does that mean you passed inspection? And which year?
Thanks.

Jared,
Not to belabor the point, but in your previous post questioning the need for power steering, you said:
Quote:
Most cars worth 40k come with power steering. So I'm leaning towards getting it.
|
So...um...how many $40,000 cars come without windshield wipers? Get it?

FWIW, I passed inspection, registered and ran my cobra from '89-'90...in both Calif and SC...and never had a wiper on it. (Did keep a pair in the trunk most of the time tho, just in case)
I always thought that if I drove fast enough no one will ever notice?

Thats the most rediculous reasoning I ever heard, but justification IS the strongest human urge.
How many original Cobra's had power steering ? (i honestly don't know).

Power steering? I personally feel that the cobra is a bare essentials type of car that was built to squeeze everybit of horsepower to it's rear wheels as it possibly could. Power steering just doesnt seem right...But that's just me
