Steering Rack Issue

I have the steering mounted to the chassis, but when I turn the wheel the rack slides side to side. One of the holes on the chassis is oval and I'm figuring that is what is causing the movment. The steering rack is tight in there, maybe even over tightened. Has anyone else experienced this problem and how was it fixed?

have you looked at the bushings in the rack?
If I am not mitaken all the CR frames have the oval on the one side.
I just re-did my steering last summer and have had no movement in mine at all.

I guess I could try replacing them. Everything for the car was bought new by previous owner, he just never put it together. Any idea what I should ask for at the parts store as far as application?

I just re-did my rack a couple of weeks ago. I made two brackets that stand off the front of the cross-member mounting holes. This eliminated the need for the longer metal bushing going through the cross-member and alowed me to get the rack at a better angle for steering arm clearance and tie rod end alignment. My original set up tended to get lose and when I tightened it up the rubber bushings crushed. It worked out great and will be easier to work on later if need be. It does take a little bending of some 1/4" stock and some welding.
