Intake manifolds Gasket problem

I’ve got a “302 short bloc engine”, from 1985. I put a RPM performer kit, which includes EDL-7121 intake manifold, and EDL-60229 cylinder head. My problem is that when I put the FEL-MS90361 gaskets on, (which are placed front and rear of the intake manifold), and make the clamping torque with my torque spanner (at 2,7 Nm or even at 2,2 Nm), my gasket splits inself all over his length, and let escape some oil. The gasket is completely crushed. Could you help me about this, and tell me how to do, because it’s the third time I change this gaskets... Which gaskets should I use ??? Are you speaking of the Cork gasket strip at the front and rear? Or the actual gasket that seals the manifold to the heads?
If it is the corks ones, many people choose to eliminate them entirely and squeeze a filler strip of black silicone sealant in the gap. Wipe it with your finger to smooth it out and it will be fine. Be sure surfaces are free of oil before doing this. |
Like Rick said, use some Black or Gray RTV on the front and back. The cork gaskets are not recommended. I am surprised they still include them.

Do you let the RTV set up before installing? Do you install the intake on fresh RTV? Also is there any gasket that runs along the sides of the intake where it contacts the head?

No, you do not let it set up. As a side note there is a better product than silicone. Here in the States it is made by Perma Tex company. It is called "The Right Stuff". It has more body than silicone and does not "flow" like silicone does. http://www.permatex.com/products/aut...sket_Maker.htm |

Domi: Sounds like you need to do two things. First, have you matched the manifold-to-head intake ports? If you, you should. Before I go any further, it sounds as though the heads have been milled or the block decked, which wouldn't moved the heads down. This will not only misalign the cylinder-head runners with the intake ports, it will move the manifold down and closer to the block. This may be why the gaskets are splitting . . . they are getting squished. The cure is to have your manifold milled, sides and bottom. Read on. Check runner to port alignment first.
If you find that port alignment is okay, do as what has been suggested and run a bead of RTV silicone across both ends of the block. Be careful not to apply too much as it will squeeze out, both inside and out. Chunks of silicone falling into the lifter valley will clog the oil pickup. Have your manifold ready to install. Set it on the engine before the silicone skins. Run the bolts in finger tight, then torque them in stages and in sequence. This should cure the problem. |
