Yes, install a thermostat. Just get one that bypasses a little so that the oil in the cooler gets circulated and you can avoid 'air pockets' when the tstat opens. MOCALS are like this, as I am sure others are. Of course if your car is street driven you could always just dummy the oil cooler and lines and run a standard filter....
