CR Headers & Side pipes

How far away from the frame should the header flange be? My flanges apear to be to far forward and if I cut out the opening I won't have much before the wheel well opening and afraid it could brake off I am wondering if the engine should be moved back a inch or so that would give me 1/2 inch from the frame. What does everyone else have? My engine is a 351 based stroker with Headers from Don @ CRII from a couple of years ago.

I sold my original CR headers to a guy from Illinois and the next week he called with the same complaint.....after talking he decided to switch them side to side and found he had them on the wrong sides??

Just may be your dilemma...I hope!!

Don't cut anything until you try this or Don responds to ya!!

Tried that and it is worse plus they were marked L and R fortunately the markings were correct.

What you might do is call Don at CR II and maybe he will have an explanation....perhaps you have headers for another motor not a 351W??

The headers are made the same way, left is left and so forth. If the headers are on backwards there is no way the sidepipess will line up at all, let alone the headers! It is not unusual for the opening to come within a 1/2 inch of the bottom of the front wheel flare. Don't like it but that is where many of them fall. Only use the "scribe lines" for reference-on ALL the cutouts. The only ones that seem to be right-on are the defroster marked cut outs.

The white marks you see are just polishing compound, here the header is actually hitting the fender. Cut out by my Ex-partner. I will open this up a little more. Right now there is alomost 5/8's of an inch of the fender not cut out to the actual flare. Ideally the cut out for the side pipes will be just at 1/4 inch at both ends. This was done by cutting on the scribe lines!

PS. Look carefully at the rear, (very dark in the picture), it is cut almost 2"s to much!

Bugged me all night. Thinking I may have read your question wrong? On all small blocks - from the four-tube flange on the header ( bolts to the side pipes) is appropximately 2"s away from the footbox frame!
Did this answer do it? If it is much closer then checkl to see if you have the right motor mounts. Moving the mounts on the frame is futile and the wrong answer.
