DV,

Instead of calling you 5 time a day (which might be taking you off the project at hand) and the fact that some of this stuff might be of interest to others working thought a CR build. I started this thread.

The steering column from Flaming river has been ordered. The guy said that the 28" version is what gets most used in cobra builds. I did not get the D-bar and universal joints. Not sure if we'll need 2 or 3. Do you think we need to drop the motor in first to find out?

I also got the last push button starter kit they had in stock (10 came into today and 9 went right to back orders)

Both items had to be shipped to me, but will get turned right around to you the day they get it.

Did the front suspension show up yet from Terry?

Yep, 28 sounds right, we can wait for the "U" joints and the shaft two joints are normal, if anyone goes for three- refigure OR use a pillow block!

I will never accuse anyone for asking a dumb question! I have done it too many times myself. "PILLOWBLOCK" IS BASICALLY A HEIM JOINT (OF MULTIPLE SIZES) with a threaded rod on one end. You there fore drill a hole or build a mount, slide the shaft through the hole then bolt it in place tightly. I.E.; steering column with more than two "U" joints will want to move in an egg shaped circle. You install the intermediate shaft through the "Pillow Block/Heim joint, bolt the Pillowblock or Heim joint in place you get the benefit of the heim/bushing while the shaft keeps it from wobbeling.

Does that make sense?

That is what I suspected. Thank you for the reply. Now I have a problem because I don't have the pillow block in place. The intermediate shaft is welded to the u-joints on both ends. Aside from replacing the assembly is there a way to rework it? Also does it matter where on the intermediate shaft the heim is placed? (i.e. centered or close to one end or the other).

John,

Check out my photos and the first one you see is of my steering shaft (pic named 1761). The pillow block is right underneath the alternator. Did you receive my PM yesterday?

OOOPS, You already replied that you know what it is. I was loading the picture and replied before I saw that you already replied to DV.

tcrist, yes pm received, thanks. I see your pillow block. Is the bracket bolted on or welded to the frame? Can I grind off the welds on my shaft to remove the u-joint and then have it re welded? Your car is looking nice.

John,
The bracket is bolted to the frame just in case I need to remove it.

I dont see why you could not just cut the welds, install the pillow block and re-weld it. My steering assy is a complete bolt on (no welding) so I can replace items as needed. I just need to keep an eye on the bolts and keep them tight. Should not be too much of a problem. I hope.

JOHN,
Cutting and re-welding can be done, but you are going to take even more tensile out of the shafts. Not sure if it would make that much difference though. IF you should ever find a twist or a ripple like turning a staw in opposite Directions with both hands-REPLACE THEM!
Something must be different with these CR's. I have never had to use a heim in a CR Cobra- just my custom streetrods........?

OK...

How big of a screw up did I do this time?

When I had my motor built. I was originally going to go with a manual transmission. I supplied my engine guy with a fidanza aluminum flywheel and the motor was built and balanced with that. A month or so after picking up the engine, I decided it would be better for me to go automatic for the tranny and had a C6 rebuilt and beefed up. Now I'm learning that a flywheel and a flexplate are two different animals.

Now what?

Ok. No worries. I'll call Terry on Monday. Is there anywhere I can get a template of the dash? I'm thinking about having an aluminum dash made and then having it powder coated transparent black. But I need some form of template to work off of.

If you want I can make a full scale drawing of the dash, but I will need the car to make it fit without modification at a later time. I could send you the "standard" dash back, but it would still have to be modified to fit properly.

I'll wait till I bring the body over to you and we can hash out the dash layout then. Once we agree on the layout, I'll make a template off it and see about getting an aluminum face plate made and finished.

Weve taken care of everything via e-mail or phone. Thought I would bring you up to date on the frame, etc.,
Firewall is finshed off, totally sanded past the wet sand-next in about 15 minutes will be paint. Door brackets have been cut out of the cowl, ground down and ready to install when the body and doors arrive. Radiator hoop is in. Cowl bar is bolted and welded in with three "Dedicated" 1/4x20 ground lugs welded in place. Inner caps on the front towers have been cut out in anticipation of Terrys QA-1's and his super front suspension arriving. I will paint all the brackets, pedal box, hinges etc, today and install tomnorrow.
Moving right along.....Lots of pictures taken!

Thanks for the update DV!!!

You should have some stuff showing up on your door step this week

1) Steering column and push button starter from Flaming River
2) Wiper motor/kit from Finish Line
3) remote oil filter kit from Finish Line
4) Heater box from Vintage Air.
5) Tie rod ends and 5 point harnesses from Summit

The radiator was ordered from Evans yesterday, but they are quoting around 10 days for delivery. The seats showed up at my house yesterday and will make the trip over with me, when I bring the body. The Spal fan and relay kit was ordered from Speedway, but the relay is back ordered till the 1st. week in June.

I talked to Terry yesterday and he said the front suspension and all the lights are headed your way. I'll try and stay on his tail until you tell me they showed up. Talked to the guy making the new lower rear arms and he's a little behind schedule, but said he'd try and rush them through.

That's about it for now. I'll be picking the body up from my body guy on Friday June 6th and will be at your place with it mid morning on June 7th.

Let me know if I need to get you anything else.

This is getting exciting!!!
