Default New Wheels

Hey guys,
I have a 1992 CR 427 and I'm looking to buy a new set of wheels and tires. I can't decide on what size wheels I should go for (16,17,18,20). Right now I have 15" Tourque Thrust wheels on it, but I'm looking for something new. I was wondering if anyone had pics of different sizes on thier Cobra, so I could see how they would look compared to what I have on there now. I would also like to know what width wheel I should get front and back, along with the backspace for each.

Any help would be appreciated!

I have 17" wheels on my car. For the size tires I'm running (335/35 and 275/45) there is a limited selection. They are also very expensive.

I think it is very unlikely to get 335s under a CR rear fenders without serious frame or body mods.

Low profile 17's,335 rear 325's front. Absolutely no body mod's, one very small modification to door locking bracket! Less than 10 minutes apiece!

Standard DV or DV II in full racing form!

I would go with the knock-off Vintage 15" using the Dunlop vintage tire. They are sweet and look the part........

PSE 11" rear wheels with 4.5" back space and 9.5" front with 5.25" back space.

I have measured for quite a while the rear size tire that can fit just inside the fender and not hit anything inside the wheel well and all I can get to fit is a 295 size tire. You stated that you fit a 335 tire. How? do you have the tire even with the outside and not tucked inside the fender or how do you get it to fit? I am currently still building by CR.

I have 18" American Racing , Ramblers, Front 245/45x18 and rear 285/40x18, I did have to adjust my fender wells in front to stop the rear of the front tire rubbing when fully turned. But with the Nitto tires , i have not even had a squeel out of them.

This is 16" wheels 255 rear and 215 front....before I rebuilt the whole car in 2018, also switched from RHD to LHD, and added power steering.

The 18" tires are also 27" in in O/D, so with a 2.88 rear the gearing is very freeway friendly. They also fill the wheel well perfectly.

The first question, I would ask is there an upgrade in brakes in your future, this will determine to a large degree the rim size you need. Also, I would not recommend any 16 inch rims, tire selection does not exist in this size, period.

Good ole Comp TAs or G Force Sport Comp 2 245/50/16 and 255/50/16
245 and 255 16s recommended by Don Scott for Classic Roadsters
The front tires rub at full turn
I’ve got these size Kumhos not available anymore
If you have 16s you can get tires but don’t buy 16” rims

Edit: Pilot Sports in 255 only now

What size did you get ?

CHANMADD, really, 18" on a Cobra ?
Please post pics.

I don't want to step on any Cobra owners toes, but over 16" looks like a hot rod. I guess it's what look what you're after. I will only have 15" on mine. The tire selection is now difficult to find compared to the larger wheels. I would love Avon tires, but their too expensive.

17" setup on a West Coast Cobra. 245/45R17 tires on the front replaced old, aged-out 245/60R15 BFG TAs. They're 0.9" smaller in diameter and the new wheels pulled them into the wheel wells, allowing me to adjust the coilovers and drop the front end enough so that I needed a lower profile saddle on the floor jack.

On the rear, the new 275/40R17 tires are about 0.2" lower than the old 275/50R15 BFGs. Again, the new wheels pulled them into the wheel wells for a much better appearance, IMO.

The front ended up about 1" lower than before, and the rear just a smidge lower. Overall, the stance is much improved - though now I need to pay even more attention to speed bumps and other road obstructions.

WCCs are already so different from the original Cobras that "looking like a hot rod" is the least of my worries. LOL

Hi Brian, the car looks great, except for the tires and wheels.

Personally, if I built another Cobra, I'd make it a lot different. One, the engine would be a small block with twin turbos, still with a 6 speed for drag and road racing. A round frame, not rectangle. A quick change center section to make gear changing quick & simple IRS system.

Two roll bars with links going down to the frame. Narrow the front and rear frame and suspension to house much wider wheels and tires. Much larger brake rotors and calipers, 6 front and back.
Lower the front & rear in the weeds with a valve to raise and lower like air bags, the car. But electric jacks like CART and F-! use in the pits and my shop.
