Default Electric Fuel Pump in a CR

Hello fellow CR owners...

Have any of you put an electric fuel pump in your cobra? If so where did you mount it? Front? back? By the tank? in the engine compartment?

The reason I ask is I put one on the frame rail but can't get it to pump any fuel. Is there a need to prime these things? It is working as if I take the hoses off I can feel the passing of air.

No electric pump in my Cobra ... just a stock mechanical.

The best place for an electric pump is behind the gas tank, and below the minimum tank fuel level. The best hose location on the tank is on the bottom. The second best is the hole thru the top of the tank next to a normal fuel level gauge/sender.

I've had quite a few electric pumps on other cars, and never ever ever needed to prime one.

Dumb question to the passing air comment ... do you have gas in the tank and is the pick-up below below the gas level?

Do you have a leak in the line from the tank to the electric pump inlet?

Remove the line from the tank at the pump. If you have a small vacuum pump, kook it up and see what happens. You should be able to pull a few inches of gravity. Connect a 8 ft piece of rubber line to the inlet of the pump (... another dumb question - I hope you haven't got the pump in backwards). Stick the hose into a small gas tank and lift the tank to a point higher that the pump. Does the electric pump now pump gas?

O.F.M..
Yea, I dont build a CR's without one. I put them on the rear crossmember (behind the seats). No it doesn't need primed. Things to check; I assume it has run before so that would eliminate the pickup problem, do you have negative and positive crossed? (Some pumps will blow a fuse, other pumps can run backwards.) Do you have the inlet/outlets crossed? Simple prolems but they have hapened many times!

Rull of thumb on electric pumps: They are meant more for "pushing" than pulling. Most pump instructions are to put the pump within 18"s of the tank if possible.

Hey, let us know what you found out and when it is working for you.

Well this is where I put my " I had brain surgery so what do you expect" clause...

I had a perfectly good pump but for some reason could not get any fuel pressure. I got very frustrated with it and went to PepBoys and bought a mechanical pump. No go there either so I said WTF. So I hooked a hose and a funnel to the inlet and filled the funnel with gas. I cranked over the motor and it sucked the funnel dry. Then I thought to myself I had removed the soft line from the hard line at the front of the car. Maybe I kinked the hard line somehow. So I pulled the soft line and when I did a piece of electrical tape was over the end of the hard line. WTF tooo... Somehow when I put the soft line back on the tape that was wrapped around the stainless braid had come off and covered the hard line... argh... how frustrating. Anyhow I fixed that and put my pump back in and voila.. We got gas....

I ran a Holly Blue one on my Cobra for 12 years and it is still on there working fine. I talk to the guy that owns it once in a while and I mounted it on a cross member just in front of the tank and lower than the top of the tank. I did put a regulator in just in front of the carburetor though as it put out 14 pounds and the carburetor only needed 6 to 8 pounds.

Cooooooooooooooolllldddddddddddddddddddddddddd.

About 18°F now. The last few nights it was down in the single digits.

The forecast for the next 10 days has the temp between 15 and 35°F.

Cannot wait for spring. I need a ride.
