Hood Latch Assembly, '91 Classic
Hello Everyone (especially DV)
I have acquired a shortened '91 Classic Roadster from the original owner, through my son (who needed money for a house) and now me. The car is mostly complete except for a few doo-dads. Right now I need a hood latch assembly. The "female" part and possible the cable. Terry in LaVonia Mich has his phone disconnected. I received a windshield rubbertrim last year from him.
I will check to see if I need that hold-open rod (NAPA 819-5298) previously mentioned by DV I think. Thanks for any help!!

I have a unused CR hood latch assembly, which includes the male upper part, the female lower latch with the mounting box. I believe I also have the cable assembly. Yours if you need it. Just let me know where to send it. Charlie

I want the dual hood handles
I have the standard Classic Roadster inside release latch. But I would like to replace it with the two outside handles like a "real" Cobra. I wonder if DV sees this if he could tell me if this is doable and what I need.

That is exactly what I have done. On Capteddies build on CC, DV has shown the dimensions on where to put the handles and how to modify on them.

Hood Prop Rod
I would like to hear how the NAPA hood prop rod works and what the modifications were. (if needed). I know DV suggested it but I am holding out for a chrome rod of some sorts. I have a 91 CR built 427. Still looking for a trunk support rod too. Finish Line has obe that extends but afraid to buy in case it does not fit. Also what type of screws are best to hold in the fiberglass where you can't put a bolt?
Some one responded on the CRII website forum, before it went down, saying they had a black tonneau cover for a CR for sale. Are you on this forum?

The shaft that I showed will go on either the right or left side of the hood. It is going to be a "little" while and I will be putting one on Cpteddies. Very minor mods need to be done so you can bolt it into the inner fender and I use "jacknuts" to bolt it to the hood 1/4x20's. The "arm" is not a shaft so to speak and is like a galvanized finish. No prepping has to be done and lasts for years! It is a stock corvette hood shaft / a corvair rear hood/engine lid shaft.
CobraEd, you know I would answer you! The post the guys are talking about is cpteddies and your timing is perfect-I just finished Ed's and have a entire series of pictures posted. Alll the parts can be had by Finishline with the exception of the two brackets I fabricated to make the hood latches-latch!
I'm going to be posting a really neat trick in a day or two so if anyone has the guts they can throw away all those fiberglass self tapping screws that constantly work loose to the point after awhile they wont tighten up anymore! (Wait til cpteddies sees these.)--roll bar grommets, outside fender mirrors, defroster vents, hood handles, anything including your boats hardware for a solid and perminant hold!

Absolutely do-able and you wont change or damage a think-just be carefull of your paint. Hint ??? a lot of guys actually leave the inside hod release hooked up-sure keeps the "nosey's" out of your engine compartment when you're not around!

Yes, it is doable. I did it and it beats the original setup (only my opinion). I wanted to get rid of all that "stuff" on the firewall (latch,wires,etc). I will try to attach a pic tomorrow. My cobra is still stored in my neighbor's garage for the winter. If you are worried about security you can get the handles with a keyed lock. I got them from Finish Line. For a hood prop, I went to the Metal Supermarket and got some stainless steel rod and bent my own.

What is a "Shortened Classic Roadsters Cobra?" did your son (?) cut the frame and body down? As far as I know, all the way back to Rutherford-to Leisure Industries, through IMAR, right up to Minnesota Classics their has only been a 94" wheel base Classic Roadsters?

Shortened Classic Roadster...
Hello DV,
Thanks for your prev info.
My roadster was shortened by the original owner around 1995. He didn't like the shape of the doors and eliminated the dogleg in them by shortening everything, including the frame, enough to "fix" the doors. About 6 inches.
CarriageHouseCustoms had to do a lot of beefing up and strenghtening to make it useable. It has now been done right. The car was Painted Nov '06 and looks beautiful in all black. I can't wait to show it to knowledgeable Classic Roadster people. There are still a few "projects" to go on it, before I get to drive it, but it is coming along!!!

When you know me better you will understand why, "I" can't see the point of customizing a custom car"!
To each his own but why not buy a 90" car in the first place, OR buy another brand with the different doors? Just a thought!

Not only do I like the look of the dual exterior latches, but, . . . . (I almost don't want to say) but it I am concerned about the inside latch breaking at some point in time with no recourse other than cutting a big hole in the back of the hood to open it.
Once I get up the nerve to do the mod, you guys can have all the inside hardware for shipping cost only. But it could take me years to get up the nerve to cut thru my beautiful red hand rubbed laquer paint job.

Hey DV!
You're preaching to the Choir on this one..however, I DO like the look without the dogleg. The original owner impulse-bought this one. Then, after seeing the other "normal" kits, decided to make it "better". He was an excellent Aircraft Mechanic. Just like Dave and Steve at CarraigeHouseCustoms here in MN. who are finishing mine.
Nice to talk to someone with an opinion to bounce off of.

I agree about being concerned with a interior hood latch release failing and not being able to open the hood.
I added some insurance, in case the interior cable would fail.
I added a redundant, second, cable. I routed it to the passenger side front fender liner, at about 10 to 11 o'clock, as you face the wheel.
I used a braided cable terminated with a small ring. It cannot be seen unless you get down and look up under the fender.
Not my idea, but read it posted here by another person. Hope that I never have to use it.
