Somebody help me!
I think that Bill (Emerson) did NOT make his doors bigger! Actually, from what I have seen Bill has cut the "web" (Thank you Terry) out of the car. The piece that goes from the bottom of the dash cowl down to the sill plate. This is how he gets his "U" shaped hinge to fit. He then "Extends" the inner door panel to fill the gap where the "web" has been cut out. Thus the inside panel or shell of the door has been extended but the actual Door Skin" has not been extended!
Right or wrong?

My attempt will be to redesign the hinge so the "web" does not need to be removed. I am going to try and make it a true R&R with no modifications. I hope!!!

I talked to Bill and he said that he did make the doors longer. Maybe he ment the door openings. Different hinge and remove the "web" will make for a lot more room to get in and out. As I said before I am going to try and redesign the hinges so there is no modification to do at all. Unless you want to that is.

I'm about 50% finished with my CR2. I've been talking with Bill on modification because I'm 6'5 and 250. He is making me the hinges which is one of about 4 modifications we are making.

I am trying to finish up the design but I had a question about the bracket that bolts to the door on the origional hinge.
The hinges that I bought has the holes for the hinge pin offset by about 1/8 of an inch from each other. My stock hinges on my car are the same way.
In other words, if the hinge brackets was bolted to something perfectly vertical the way that they are attached to the door, one door would be tilted down and the other door would be tilted up.
This just does not compute. Should there have been right and left door brackets? Should the holes actually be in-line?

Actually I am refering to the origional CR hinges not Bill's or the redesigned one. If Bill's hinge bolts to the same points that the origional CR hinges do then I might be just waisting my time. I might just stop this project all together. No reason to try and re-invent the wheel, so to speak.

Terry,
Emerson redesigned the door hinges and he got an extra 6" of leg room by cutting away the part of the sidewall that the hinge used to be behind and moving the cowl bar a little. His design works great and that extra leg room makes it much easier to avoid the hot pipes when getting out. I had talked to Bill about upgrading my doors before I sold my Cobra. He has done a lot of improvements on the cars he now builds.

What Bill did was redesign the door hinges and then he took out of the sidewall about 6" where the front part of the door covers and moved the cowl bar a little. That gave 6" more leg room to get in and out. It really works well and helps with avoiding the hot side pipes too. I was going to have him modify my doors but sold the Cobra first.

I have seen the part you are talking about drilled in every position but correct,causing lots of agony,pete had sent me a set of undrilled brackets,so i drilled mine on my lathe,bolting the bracket to the carrige,spotting the holes correctly.Bolt the bracket to a small .500 plate you can adapt to tool holder t-slot,tack a support across each uprite of bracket(so holes stay aligned)and that should do,just go slow.
I would weld up the holes on the ones you have,again,i think this was just innacurrate drilling on CRs part,i am sorry,i should of told you about this,i think it was a major problem with door alignment problems,also,in the space under the top of the front fender,some of this can be ground away without detection for added clearance.

in absolute honesty I have never measured,, especially like you Pro's!
The way I do the doors ( somewhere on the board (?) I have it all explained.
Wally you sound like one of the engineering guys! And, I'm sure it works, But here goes again:
The doors are notorious for not lining up, I don't even bother anymore! I simply take the plasma cutter or a big cut-off wheel and cut the hinge plates right out of the cowl bar. I then bolt the hinges to the doors, one door at a time. Then bolt the "cut-out" cowl plate to the door. I then put the door in place, close the plate back up to re-fit in the cowl bar and hold the door in as perfect alignment as I can. (Two people work great but one can do it with shims! Then when I am happy the way the door fits on all 6 axis I tack in the cowl/hinge plate.... all looks good, weld the plate in fully.
Done. Now if you mounted the body as previously described every thing will go back together and fit as perfectly possible.
Takes longer to describe it than it does to do it! Like Cpteddie just showed, I put his door on in less then ten minutes just for a rough fit - and that looked good!

Understood guys, thanks. I just thought that maybe an angle was built in because of the weight of the door. I guess i will start working on them again.

Help...
I need a LEFT door hinge AND bracket- the large "U" shaped bracket that holds the door pin.
Terry, I got the drawings, one thing to make a mechanical drawing but quite another to take a "part" an make a drawing!
Giving serious thought to making a Double Venom-III ?????? How about "Gull-wing Doors?" A modernized/modified,stroked 4.6 with a blow-proof AOD, or a -6- spd.?
Fully electric powered doors/trunk, and TILT nose? ( Got to run 10's maybe even high 9's!)
????? Other Ideas?
