Default Crossbolt 390 FE

Gentlemen,

I'm from south Florida and need some guidance on where to take my 63' FE crossbolt 390 block to be properly built . "YES" I said crossbolt 390. I've read some forums on different opinions and pretty sure I have a rare block. Hope someone out there can help with some guidance

Probably an aftermarket modification. It has been done quite a few times before.

Thank You for responding. I understand Ford did allot of different things in those days, but not ruling out any aftermarket mods.

The 406 was the predecessor to the 427 and it was cross-bolted from the factory. The bore size was the same as the 428 (4.13") too. What is your block's bore size? Also, there's no bosses on the block where the cross bolts are which sort of points towards an aftermarket installation.

Are you east or Gulf coast?

I was told at a local machine shop it was a 390 due to the bore size.

I'm on the Gulf coast. I don't know of any FE specialized builders in our neck of the woods. Best bet is to get on fordfe.com and ask that question. If there's anyone around they would know. There's a few top notch FE builders on this forum, none in Florida that I'm aware of.

Southern Automotive does this regularly. I am told.

Most likely aftermarket. What are the casting numbers? Should be near the oil filter and be something like CxAE-xx where the x is the variable. Also take a pic of the back of the block showing the cam plug area.

There was one year, 64 I believe, that blocks for 352/390 had the bosses cast on them for cross bolting although they were not drilled nor did they have the correct caps for cross bolting. I have one of these blocks in my shop, although it is wrapped so I cannot tell you what the casting number is. I was common to swap caps and drill the blocks.

Try to scrub down those casting numbers with a wire brush. Hard to read first numbers.

It is hard to read... I'll try that. I was thinking of doing that but thought I would ruin any chance of getting a good reading by removing any rusty indentation of the # or letter. I will post some more pics including the other area you mentioned.

Also a pic of the other side of the block.
Where was the casting number you took a pic of?
Also, the "H" code was used for 427's according to my records but I need to see it better to confirm.

I read it as a C3AE-6015-H. It's a regular, nothing special 63 390 block. That (may) sort of support my original statement about the cross-bolting being and aftermarket modification.

On the other hand, there are several posts with 427s having the same casting numbers. Get a ruler and measure your bore and get back with us.
