Default Hilton Head Island soon to be owner/driver

Hello to all the members of this great site. Been reading this board since ordering my SPF back in June. Don't think there's another one here on the island, although I have seen a black beauty twice but don't believe it lives here (making this forum all the more valuable as I won't have a local 'go to' for advice, etc. and you guys all seem willing to offer up whatever comes to mind on a subject to be of help.) Looking forward to kicking around questions, opinions, etc. when mine finally arrives. Which raises a question...special ordered mine (color issue) in June; now 10/1 and no word on status of build. How long is typical for a special order build from anyone's past experience? Told 12 wks. is normal to get it stateside? Appreciate your comments in advance, and glad to be a member!!

I believe there is at least one other Cobra on the island.

I will be moving full time to H. H. next year and will be bringing SPF #1378.

What make and who did you order your car from? 12 weeks doesn't sound unusual for a car especially with special paint. I would think whoever took your order should be able to give you some sense of timing.

There are a number of car clubs located in the area so there appear to be a pretty good supply of local gear heads.

Get ready for more fun than you know what to do with.....nothing compares with driving a Cobra!

Jeff, thanks for the reply. I see you're from 'joisey'. Lived outside of Phila. for many years and vacationed at jersey shore every summer. Anyway ordered a superformance mk111 from dynamicmotorsports in ohio. Looked at same car w/Dennis Olthoff in NC as well as L.A. dealership in June. Liked the way I was treated by guys in Ohio so I went with them. Cobra was supposed to be shipped 8/24 but is suffering a mysterious production back-log. Look me up when you're down here; cel# 843-384-1589. Rich L.

Rich- There is another SPF in HH.....................mine! My car is currently at our home in HH Plantation. I'm currently at home in Chicago but will be coming down for the winter in a couple weeks. Are you going to the Concours d' Elegance show in November? It's usually a very nice show (not quite as nice as the one on Amelia Island, but nice just the same).
I will be down in time for the show so maybe we can hook up and talk Cobra's.
I know the Rosen's (who are terrific people) and they will shoot straight with you on your car.
If I make it down in time, I will also be going to the "car show" that the guys from Carolina Dreamers Car Club puts on in Main Street Villiage. Have you ever gone there? They have a nice little show on the last friday of every month during the summer and October will be their last event for the year. I'll bring my car and we can talk about SPF's all you want.

I ordered mine in May from Dynamic. It arrived about a month ago. Installation should be done next week. I'm going there on Monday! My salesperson was great! Also, once my chassis was shipped from the factory, they sent me a link so that I could track it's voyage from South Africa all the way to the dealership. I know that's kinda dorky - I don't care - just a few more days - and it's here!

Terry,

Some time ago one of the Hilton Head mag's profiled an owner of a red cobra, which was the other one I mentioned lived on the island. Is that yours? or are we soon to have 4 Cobra's on the island.

Jeff-

Are you talking about the Lowcountry Monthly article? No that wasn't me, that was Scott Kennedy in his red w/ black stripes CSX 4000 series. I think the number is CSX4427 (he was on a waiting list for the "427" number). He and his car were at the Concours show a couple years ago and we talked for quite sometime. Bobby Rahal was the honorary chairman at that years show and he drove Scott's CSX around for awhile thinking about buying it. Scott is a heck of a nice guy.
My car is Indigo Blue with Whits stripes, 427 S.O. built by Bill Parham @ Southern Automotive in GA. There used to be a solid Black SPF on the Island but I believe the guy sold it a couple years ago. There was also a Lone Star Cobra owned by a gentleman named Guy Foulke who works on Hilton Head, but I haven't seen him or his car in a couple years. I know a guy in Beaufort that has a nice FFR with a 427 S.O. and another guy that built a FFR Coupe. They usually hang out in Beaufort and attend a couple of shows there, but I did see him at the show in Sea Pines a couple months ago while I was down on business. While at that show I saw a solid White Cobra (I think it was an ERA), but I don't know if that guy lives on the Island or not (I saw the car but never saw the owner anywhere).

Are you building on the Island? When do you plan on moving? My wife and I keep going back and forth from Chicago to HH but if my business keeps booming down there I will be down a lot more often next year. This year it was about 50/50, 6 months in each area. I'm hoping next year it will be at least 8-9 months down there and only 3-4 months here.

There are a lot of folks down there from NJ, so you will feel right at home. My neighborhood is full of transplants from Jersey; I think NJ is second only to people from Ohio as far as transplants go.

Best of luck to you, and let me know when you arrive. -I'll probably be there if it's in the fall, winter, or springtime.

Terry;

Sounds like you have a pretty good handle on cobras in HH. There also seems to be a fair amount of gatherings for car guys in and around the island. I am looking forward to attending the concours in November, which will be my first time.

I bought my car from Snakepit on Long Island and Nick from Classic Concepts did the power train install. He is absolutely the best and I will miss him. Do you have any mechanic recommendations around HH?

We are currently building a home in Wexford which should be complete next June or July and renting a condo in Shipyard until the house is finished. I make it down every couple of weeks for long weekends and hope to be full time by the end of '08.

Hopefully we'll cross paths in the near future.

Jeff

588 cubic inches!!?? That's a lot of cubes from a 460 block!

Let us know how the dyno goes.

I know it's an exciting time for you--enjoy and have fun.

Jeff-

I just completed a project in Shipyard this past August and I'm supposed to start another one there in December in the Windward Villiage condo's. I'm a contractor and they need to be refurbished. You'll like Wexford; it's very nice back there, as I'm sure you know. I have a couple of friends that are golf pro's in the area so I get to play Wexford from time to time. -Great course.
There are a couple of car clubs in the Beaufort County area (including Carolina Dreamers that I mentioned above) and there are a number of shows that take place during the course of a year. Actually, there's a lot more going on down there (concerning cars) than I thought there would be. Living in Chicago I became spoiled with all the car club offerings / shows in this area so I didn't expect much when we started living part time in little 'ol HH........but I was pleasantly surprised. In fact, this was the 1st year I took the Cobra down with me in the spring, and I left it there when we came back to Chicago in August. I miss it though! We had Indian summer here in September & October and I could have gotten a lot of drive-time in. Up until a couple days ago, it was warmer here in Chicago than it was down in Hilton Head!
There are a couple of guys down there that know there way around an engine bay. I know what you mean though.........I'll miss my mechanic here in St. Charles if we ever move down to HH full time. My guy started installing so many engines in SPF cars that he actually started buying rollers and selling them out of his showroom. For awhile he was getting them from the Rosen's at Dynamic but he started selling so many of them that now I believe he get's them right from Superformance and is an authorized dealer. He really knows these cars like the back of his hand and is an excellent mechanic as well.
I know one guy on the Island who used to own a Cobra replica and he runs his own auto shop. In fact, he's just around the corner from Wexford & Shipyard (turn right just before the Sea Pines circle and he's down on the left). I can't remember the name of his garage, but it may be Island Motors. There's another guy in Bluffton that has a garage off 278. His shop is called Matt's Auto and he has a blown 454 Chevelle that he races. I've heard he's pretty good, even though he's a Chevy guy.
If you're down in HH during the last friday of the month, look me up at the Main Street Villiage show. I'll have my car there and we can chat. I'll also be at the Concours for at least 1 of the days (probably Saturday). The Carolina Dreamers usually have their cars in the show on Saturday because it's the day for "muscle cars" (versus the cars that are being voted on on Sunday). I haven't decided if I'm taking my SPF to the show or not, but if I do I'll park it in the Carolina Dreamers section. Saturday is also the auction which is a lot of fun. I know a guy down there with a COPO Camaro that is supposed to be on the aution bloc. He's looking to get a million bucks for it, but I told him he'll never get that much at THAT show (Barrett Jackson maybe, but not the HH concours). I wish him all the luck, but we'll see who wins the bet.

Jeff: Did you go to Main Street last friday? Sorry I didn't make it, but I got into town late and then the bad weather kept me from taking my car out.
-Hopefully we can get together another time.

BTW, I edited my post above about the garage near you. It's not called HH Auto it's called Island Motors. The guy seems to know his stuff and used to own a Cobra replica himself.
