So I did it.

A year ago I bought two Barrett Jackson Shelby GTs. It was a Mission From God and we donated one of the cars at the Barrett Jackson auction on Sunday to the Carroll Shelby Childrens Foundation.

I went down there with the intent of buying a little red Mustang Convertible (owned by Ricky Nelson and driven by his twins Gunnar and Matthew) or a Really Sweet GT350 that someone wanted more than I did (it sold for $200K).

I left with CSX4005LA. British Racing Green with Yellow Strips (no, I'm not a packers fan).

It is a carbon fiber body with a Roush 427 IR power plant.

I'm told it was originally delivered to someone from Mexico City in Feb. 2007. it has <600 miles on it.

How many of you have driven your Cobra in the snow? (I did, 120'). It's supposed to be about 50 on Saturday.

I've wanted one of these since I was 16 and heard Cosby's 200MPH!!!

P.S. That's not me in the pic. That's the totally cool guy from Intercity that delivered the car. He wouldn't drive it up the driveway and congratulated me (first time ever driving it) for not spinning out on the icy surface.

So, does anyone have any info on this car? I'm told it was one of 3 built for some gentlemen from Mexico City by HST in San Diego.

It is a carbon fiber body with a Roush/Tremec power train.

It was only driven about 600 miles in 2 years. When I went to sign the paperwork at BJ they warned me that I needed to check the coolant. They said it was a CA and Mexico car and probably didn't have good coolant. So on Sunday morning I went to find a tester, in amongst trying to get my car ready for the block. Before I went down I found an Autozone and got a tester. It was good to something way above freezing. So after my car went I went back and got an iprovized siphon tube (brake hose), an empty gallon jug, and a gallon of antifreeze. I siphoned off about 1 gallon from the radiator and went back to get another gallon of anitreeze and put about 1/4-1/3 gallon more. The BJ guys took it outside after the auction was over on Sunday (and I was headed to the airport) and warmed it up to mix what was in the block. When it got here on Monday I tested it again and it was good to -37.

Now I'm draining everything that closely resembles liquids and starting over - coolant, oil, brakes, anything that runs.

One more tidbit: I'm told the CSX4xxxLA cars were built by HST as completed cars for delivery to "Latin America" (unlike the US where you get the roller and have to add the power train yourself)

If anyone has any more info on this or any of the CSX4xxxLA cars I would appreciate it.

I never knew they built CSX bodies in carbon fiber, wow!
I wonder if there's a connection with the guy in TX who built John's (DoubleUgly) car? His is carbon fiber.

Nice car by the way! Neat that it has lights for the number's ... although I don't think SC's were ever raced in endurance races.
Still cool though!

Answers to a couple of Qs:

Our weather in the front range this time of year is kind of spooky. A week ago Tuesday and Wednesday it was almost 70. Tuesday/Wed this week it was -10 or so when I went to work. We can get 60 degree low to high swings. Oh, and the winds. Hurricane force 75+ MPH are frequent.

Snow: I told my wife when I was posting last night that I might be the only person to ever drive a Cobra in the snow. This was a dusting at about 2 inches. It was -7 when they delivered it and I swept the snow off the driveway. The driver wouldn't touch it, and he cautioned me about how goosy it was going to get. I drove it straight up with no problems (I've never owned a front wheel drive vehicle). He congratulated me. I was scared

The snow is all gone now and it's supposed to be in the 50's on Saturday. Co-pilot is scared of it but did ask when we could go for a ride (after I showed her the 5-point harness) and if the weather is nice I'm going to take it down to the Gunbarrell (CO) Shelby American Collection museum and ask Dave what he thinks.

I think I only want to make one mod. Is it possible to put in a removable steering wheel at this point? It would make it lots easier to get in/out.

Why this one: Well, there was a Steve Becker red with a Ford 427 but it was carbureted. I spoke with someone that had one originally and converted it to fuel injection because of the altitude. I set my bogey on this one at the difference and won. I got the C/F roller for free.

Does anyone have any experience with this Roush powerplant? It's a Tremec 5-speed.

P.S. I'd wanted one of these since I heard Cosby's 200MPH when I was 16 (yep, he did it in 1968). I have it on vinyl.

Tony,

Oh no, there are plenty of us who have regularly driven our Cobras in the snow. The trick is to wear layers so you can add or remove as your elevation and temperature levels change. My professional advice on this is to limit it to less than 6 inches if you want to keep your oil cooler scoop intact....Ask me how I know .......

As far as the Rousch engine, it should run flawless all the way up to redline. WIth your elevation changes, the fuel injection was the right way to go and should provide you years of trouble free useage......

HST is officed in San Diego and the plant that produces the CSX chassis is in Tijuana.
Nice car and great engine.

Sounds and looks like a really unique Cobra. Congrats. Quick question: given that is was manufactured as a complete vehicle for export, how is it titled?

Hope you don't plan to move to CA or sell the car there. The LA versions are for export as completed cars. In the Republik of Kalifornia you can't register that car without meeting DOT safety and smog standards for the year it was built.

Actually, it has a current California title (I just got it last night), as a 65 Cobra. The dealer titled it in CA before selling it.

The answer is "Yes." A quick-release steering hub can be fitted to your column without changing the location of the wheel at all. While mine was crafted by ERA, I have seen several others that I'm sure would fit your CSX car's column.

Interesting... I wonder how the dealer titled it in CA as a 1965. If the vehicle's title originated in a state (not CA) where it was legally titled as a 1965, and then re-titled in CA as a 1965, then there is probably no worries - this would be like re-titling a used vehicle being brought in CA. However, if the dealer acquired the title as original in CA as a 1965 (ie: first title in CA, not brought into CA as a used, already-legally-titled vehicle), then he may have crossed a line.

Moving forward, I think the key thing is what the CO DMV will do, assuming you plan on re-titling/registering it in CO. Do they accept 1965 titles from CA for "specially" constructed vehicles? Or are you required to change the title from "1965 Cobra" to "200x Specially Constructed Vehicle"? I'm sure someone from CO can elaborate here on this...

You might want to look into the paper trail that lead to your new acquisition being titled as a 1965 Cobra in CA. If the paper trail is not "clean" and the CO DMV steps in, then you may have grounds to go back to the selling dealer.

Again, very interesting... Keep us updated of what you find...ok?
