My new build...errrr Re-build

Guys,

Going to let the cat out of the bag, I just got a hold of another project. Unfortunately, that means, I'm going to let another project go. The Alfa Spider I was attempting stuff a small block ford into is going down the road. I have come to realize five things; I have not been working on it, it's taking up space, I really like Cobras, I would rather work on Cobras, and I would rather have another Cobra.



Bingo! The new project is in the garage! With a little work, I can turn this "sow's ear" into a "silk purse". It's an FFR Mark II that was involved in a bit of a wreck (passenger side). My goal is to build it into a 289 Slab Side Street Replica using one of "Mr Bruce's" bodies.



This side took the brunt of the collision. The steering rack is pushed back less than an inch (end of the ear is bent a bit). Everything else looks great. I will need to replace the front "A-frames" and straighten the "Bird cage" a bit.



The PO hit a lady who pulled out in front of him. His insurance company declared it a total loss but let him keep the car. He pulled quite a few parts for his new build but left me a super starting point. It also has complete 3 link rear suspension and a rebuild 8.8.



This is the "look" I'm shooting for. Lucky for me, much of the parts I've purchased for the Alfa will work in this build. I also have a '67 "Fairlane" 289 sitting the garage along with a T-5.

Guys,

Here are the gauges I'm planning on using. Again something different, Jaeger gauges from my Alfa Romeo Spiders. I actually have quite a collection, two sets; 1 set from my '80 and another from a '73 parts car. The speedometer will be from the '73 (140 vs 85 mph), the tach will be from the '80 (Electric)

Just throwing this out there, in case you didn't know.
I believe FFR is now offering the 289 FIA body only (and misc parts).
It was made for the MK4, but I would think it would also fit the MK2 / 3, without significant issue.

Was Mr. Bruce's body made for FFR?

Yes, Mr. Bruce's body is made to fit an FFR frame with some trimming of the aluminum.

As for the new FFR FIA...



I've "tried it on" so to speak. Looks great, but I already have one race car for the street. Now I want to try my hand at a Street Cobra.

Don't blame you, I think the street 289 is very cool (and a real sleeper).
Are you going to run wire wheels? I REALLY like that look. Looks like a british sports car with American Muscle.

That is the look I want too, but will wire wheels make the budget, that is the question.



I already own a set of 16" Rota Minilite replica wheels. We will see if the budget grows to fit in wires...

Trunk Modification:

Any builder of a Factory Five Roadster knows there is wasted space located under the floor of their trunk. The Fox Mustang gas tank has a vapor expansion area to one side and drops down for 2/3 of the tank. For my first build, I did not take advantage of this modification and have be kicking myself ever since.



Extra trunk space 23" X 17 1/2" X 6 1/2"



This trunk mod has been one of key selling points to the Wife, I have made sure TWO cases of wine will now fit in the trunk. As far as she is concerned, this Cobra will be twice as good as my green Mark III! Should make for a lot of fun during Snakes & Grapes!

Sounds like a great project. We need more good build threads on this forum, so looking forward to following it.
I considered using the same Alfa speedometer on my FIA build but the way things fell, ended up with a Jaguar [5" Smiths] instead. The style of the Jaeger speedo and tacho will suit a 289 roadster nicely.
