Seat Belts

Hello
I plan to not use a race harness style seat belt. Laws where I live are already touchy and that style tends to be a magnet if not ammunition for the police to pull you over as a potential speeder.

My question. I want a regular style with both driver and passenger pulling out from between the seats. See picture. With a "T" welded support system behind to weld to, what Ford model retractable is recommended? I've been told to use a style that shot out from the rear window deck. Like a Escort or Focus (non hatchback) Any Ford parts guys out there that can lead me right?

Hard to see from the picture but I think the 1969 lap belts like came in my 69 Cobra would work. They have a retractable roller and bolt to the frame on each side of the seat. But I am sure that some of the newer belts would also work and most likely be better than those as they are old style.

In New Zealand they are trying to outlaw lap belts. In an accident with out a shoulder restrant they tend to cut you in half with major internal injuries, if you brains don't get bashed out on the windscreen or dash.

please think of lap diagonal as the minimum

A lap belt isn't what I'm after. It is the pull down combo.

- but this is a static 3 point belt, although i am upgrading to retractors at some point this year. The bracket you see is part of a 'tower' that is bolted to the chassis directly above the diff. It enters the cockpit via a slot.
there are also some pics of the central mounted retractors on my old green car (a Pilgrim) - these bolted to a steel bracket embedded in the fibreglass. it was effective, but less aesthetically pleasing.

this also may be useful, pics of the Hawk arrangement, which is very similar to the solution used on AC MKIVs using inertia reel retractors.

Retractor seat belts are manufactured to suit the mounting position of the retractor reel. If the reel is on its back in a horisontal position the locking ball is in its lowest position so as to allow you to draw out the belt. therefor the mounting position and angle is what dictates what belt is suitable for your application. In effect if the reel is mounted at 45 deg you require belt A. If mounted at 90 deg to vertical then it is belt B If it is parellel then you need belt C. Therefor if you have the wrong belt for your mounting position you will not be able to extend it without it locking up. To sum up if you mount between the seats you will need a belt that will allow you to extend in the horisontal mounting. To find these belts you need to find a manufacturer or car model that has the same mounting position. Belt manufacturers will sometimes sell retail to the public as in Australia. TRy SIMPSON Harness or Deist either one has several models that you could fit to your Cobra I have Deist and it has a Y shoulder harness and 4 point support.
