ERA #561 For Sale

Well..... I never thought this would happen.... I found another Cobra I'd rather have......no, I won't tell you what it is or where it is because I don't want the competition for purchasing it.

ERA #561 (one of the most looked at cars on this website) is only one of three ERA 427's (to my knowledge) ever built with the STREET configuration (no rollbar, no sidepipes, no hood scoop) It's got a real 427 Sideoiler with all the best parts that puts out 516HP to the rear wheels. I have a 1 inch stack of receipts that exceeds $80,000. The car now has just over 3000 miles, never raced, never over 5000 RPM.

If you want a Cobra 427 that you can drive for over an hour and still hear yourself think afterward -- this is your car. I've owned 5 Cobras now - this is the only 427 I've ever been able to stand to drive more than about 20 minutes without wanting to "get out" because of the sidepipe noise, smell and heat.

As new condition - proven show winner - meticulous exacting detail to original that has now won awards at two major Concours D'elegance showings.

The car is in Portland Oregon. Registered as a "1967 Cobra Replica". I will arrange (but not pay for) shipping in enclosed, insured carrier for under $2000 almost anywhere in the U.S. It came from Rockville Maryland to my place in Portland for that amount - took 6 days.

Many pictures and descriptions can be seen by clicking on the "photo gallery link" at the left.

$65,000 firm, no dreamers or time wasters please. Serious inquiries to:

will you guarantee 500hp at the rear wheels?

289Cobra 08-20-2002 08:19 AM

You are welcome to dyno it yourself - as soon as I see your cashier's check and something other than an email........

Bony,
I believe that it is "500hp TO the rear wheels" rather than AT the rear wheels. There was some discussion in an earlier thread of approximately 19% hp loss difference between the hp at the fly wheel vs. the rear wheels. Still, this is a beautiful car with the roadster look and plenty of power.;)

289Cobra 08-20-2002 06:23 PM

I did write "to the rear wheels", didn't I?

Tom-In-Ohio 08-20-2002 07:12 PM

Tim,

That is one beautiful car. I can see why you won at two major showings.

Be sure and look at this in the photos gallery for details on the car. It's the plaque I display with the car at shows.

I'm one of those folks that have been visiting your gallery. I love your car. Great color/great look. You should get every dime.

Is 500 HP "To the rear wheels" after the differential (and transmission)?
Or is this really "To the transmission"?

Can we clarify where exactly, or better yet, how this value was determined?

If you have dyno results, what were the peak numbers and at what RPM's. 500 seems high, even at the flywheel for a true 427, even one with 2x4 induction. Certainly possible if engine is built for high-RPM range use, but you state engine has never been over 5000 rpm. Sorry if I'm sounding persnickety, but it just seems like a lot of dancing around about what exactly is the HP of the engine.

Thank you

bonyhadi 08-21-2002 05:52 AM

It is a beautiful car. No question, one of the nice ones. Take a look at DVSFII thread what an
ERA w/427 s.o.& 2x4's actually pulled, a far cry for 500 to/at the wheels. One thing is for sure,
when you state something in you ad, then when someone asks, you reply, dyno it yourself after you pay for it, you have lost my attention and your credibility. 500hp where, on the dyno before
the under car exhausts? Sorry to waste your time with an honest question.

Bill Wells 08-21-2002 06:03 AM

Jeb: his 'placard' pictured on one of his posts read : "engine dyno testing yielded 516 hp at 6500 rpm on premium pump gas". seems to me that your question was answered in his prior posts. what am i missing ? so he says '500 to the rear wheels', guess he should have said '516 hp to the rear wheels ', but it makes no significent difference. oon any given day the same engine might dyno at different numbers, more so on a chassis dyno which is not typically in a controlled environment vs engine dyno that is usually more controlled.

utilizing more commonly used parasitic loss figures of 15 or 17 % vs 19% then rear wheel hp on a chassis dyno should come in at 415 or 425 respectively using 500 hp engine dyno stats...or 428 and 439 using 516 engine hp.

seems we are jumping on his numbers when we have not all read his other post that gave the answer ?? bill

Jeb 08-21-2002 07:21 AM

Not to go all Worldcom here, what's a few billion here and there, but his initial post, without going through his whole photo gallery, stated 500 HP to the wheels and that the engine had never been over 5000 rpm.

516HP, on an engine dyno, at 6500 rpm, is more of a reasonable value, which is all I was looking for. High HP without high RPM didn't make sense to me.

Thank you.

289Cobra 08-21-2002 09:58 AM

Now you know why I put "no time wasters" in my original ad. None of the "nit pickers" here have any intention of buying the car - they just want to find something to pick on. What I meant by "never over 5000 RPM" refers to the way I personally DRIVE the car -- I never FLOG it! No need to - it's blindingly fast without having to rev it that high.

...... Of course the dyno test went over 5000 RPM. Don't be stupid.

You guys need to get a life.

Dan Semko 08-21-2002 10:02 AM

Give the guy a break!

Guys,
Give it a break, it was an honest mistake which would have been easily clarified if you read all of the information posted on the car.
If you are truly interested in purchasing the car, contact him personally rather than badgering him to death on line.

Jeb 08-21-2002 10:12 AM

I noticed that in a search on 289Cobra, he has (at the time) 22 posts, a very large percentage of which concern selling his ERA.

A few posts by him, in a thread of someone selling a 289 slabside were of the nature, by him, of the posts above trying to clarify his stated facts, to which he is now objecting. If that reads convulted, it can be simply translated to: the pot is calling the kettle black.

Sorry for wasting his time.

Dan Semko 08-21-2002 10:20 AM

One too many dents!

Jeb,
I think that you may have experienced one too many dents.:D

computerworks 08-21-2002 10:32 AM

Hello boys...

I always liked the look of that street ERA.

Now, down to business....

Jeb, et al... please go find other sand to play in. This is a For Sale thread.

As a courtesy to members, a Q & A dialog is appropriate in the Cobras For Sale forum....
....but a pissing match is not.

No need to reply.

ComputerWorks: You are absolutely correct.

And now the HP issue is all clear, thank you 289Cobra.

But, I think it is a legitimate question to ask if the following (dated 7/8/2002 addressed to David Kee) has been resolved, perhaps offline:

I own ERA #561, built new in 1999 by Steve McKellar .. You built the tranny for him - I have a copy of the receipt dated 2/25/99 for $1695. I bought the car last summer and it now has only 3000 careful miles - never raced - never over 5000 RPM (afraid to hurt the $20000+ Sideoiler), and I NEVER sppedshift or any of that crap some guys do to abuse their cars. Anyway, when I shift from 1st to second and second to third now - I feel some "weird " stuff vibrating in the shift handle.... like synchros not engaging properly or something. And, sometimes when I engage the clutch in 1st it makes a brief squeeling noise.

Question - how long to you warrant your transmissions? Shouldn't it last more than 3000 miles - especially since it has had no abuse?

I'm looking for some help here - didn't think I was going to have to buy a new tranny after only 3000 miles........... I have a suspicion it won;t be long before I'm calling for a tow truck when it breaks.

Tim,
Our warranty information can be found at:

There could be several things that may cause the symptoms you are describing. Clutch and shifter adjustment is critical and is most times the culprit when more than one gear is involved.
Do you know how many miles were put on the transmission before you purchased the car last summer?

In case 289Cobra continues with the p*ssing contest. I just want to reassure him that I'm only trying to get the clear facts about the car out there as there seems to have been some not-crystal-clear statements made in this thread about it.

I bow to those who seem to know this car personally and consider it a nice car.

If nothing else, my search turned up more confirmation of the babying 289Cobra has done to this car. The searches do bring up more questions though, like who owned it previously, how did they baby it and who exactly spent the $80K in receipts? But I officially sign-off on expecting any further answers to my questions and hereby declare my interest in this undoubtedly fine automobile to be satiated.

Thank you very much

More smear attempts by Jeb

Issue was resovled - just needed to adjust the clutch and use different gear oil.

David Kee can verify giving me the solution - please feel free to call him.

Gee Jeb - every effort you make to try to smear my car just doesn't pan out for you does it? What is your problem anyway? I got a question for you:

Do you really own an original 289 - why don't you post some photos of it here and tell us the serial number so we can all verify your "claim" with the Shelby registry???

427Aggie 08-21-2002 12:46 PM

You know I try not to get into this stuff but Jeb drop it.

Everything is let the buyer beware...if someone likes this car then they will buy it regardless of your opinions. I watched a similar thread on one of my friends cars go into decay because someone didn't like the interior.

If you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all....Its a pretty car 289 good luck selling it...I do believe the current market will make it a little difficult but best to you.

Matt (who cares what you think about anyones car...its theirs and they like it)
