1968 Shelby 500KR

I just got a call from a local Greensboro man whose girlfriend's dad recently died and left a red 1968 500KR, which has recently been totally restored. He apparently owned it for over 20 years. Anyone have any ideas regarding values? She wants to sell it.

Tout 10-14-2003 06:43 PM

Values differ on these cars,FB or conv? Options ? All orginal? Smog etc, email and I will put you in touch with someone that you can trust. Tout

mrmustang 10-15-2003 09:35 AM

Jim,

Give me a call with the details, and I'll fill you in as to value. Figure at the very least, rust free, semi detailed, no rust or bondo $38,000 and up. The key to the real value will be in the date coded (original) drivetrain, and the level of restoration and detailing done to the car. Top dollar, I've seen concourse quality cars hit $65,000..............

Original GT-350 here on Island. "Re-baged" as a 500 with a 427 under the hood. Messed up 350 or "clone" 500? Offered at $50K and has been for sale several years now.

I hope to inspect the car this Monday and I will be able to give everyone more details after that visit. I will try to get some photos of the car to post as well. Thanks for everyone's input. I will be in contact with the data I gather.

I have inspected the beautiful red 1968 500KR fastback. It's really nice! The second owner, who bought the car in 1970, died this June, and his widow wants to sell the car. It has just finished a mechanical and paint restoration, with new exhausts, new paint, rechromed original parts, original interior except for new door panels, original engine and transmission, 62,000 miles, 4 speed, AC, AM radio, tilt wheel, repro wheels. Original seatbelts, instruments. Original build Data plate & Shelby Plate with build sheet still taped to wiring harness under dash! Nice new red paint. All of emissions system in place, except snorkle tube, (of course!).
Brakes, clutch, water pump, gaskets all redone. Steering wheel apparently worn (wrapped in leather wheel cover currently). Seats and carpet, console cover, etc. all original, with minimal wear. Carpets re-dyed, not replaced, look great. Had Crager wheels, which were recently replaced with repro. wheels. Trunk doesn't have original lining or spare. Original owners manual with data of first owner. I will post pics ASAP.

Jim I sent you another e-mail. if you have price info contact me @ jed@craftech.com Thanks- Dave

Jim, based on your feedback and current sales prices, I would guess the car to be in the low to mid 50's category. As always the car could bring more or less dependant upon the buyer and the seller. KR fastbacks have traditionally been in this mid dollar category and rarely bust the ceiling like KR convertibles unless they are Trailer Queens. Still with a production run of 933 cars it is certainly has Collector car potential.

Thanks for everyone's replys. Photos coming when I get them downloaded.

Jim , from what the pictures show I would say this car is a 4 to, 5 in a scale of10. It looks like most of the car is complete but showing its age, with some parts being installed wrong. The one thing about this car is that if it is an original AC car their are only few that exist,I know this because I own one. Most will tell you that no AC was available on 4 speed KR cars, check in the opening under the front bumper for the factory oil cooler that was on all AC cars ,should be about 5x12 green/aqua color. snorkel is wrong for this car also, you can email me if you wish ,my car is rated a #9 and know these car fairly well. Jim , if you can ,try reaching under the dash on top of the steering colum, there might be a build sheet taped to it that will show everything about this car .Tout

Tout,

Sorry to disagree, but I owned KR convertible, 4spd with Air. Also still own the door (all that is left) to 03278, which was also a KR convertible with Air (according to the Marti's report I have on it). I've spoken with Jim on the car, I trust his assesment, and stick with my original posting as to value.

Yours in Buying and Selling Fords,

Bill S.

PS: The cars value is enhanced by the fact it is an original "resale red" item., and has only 62,000 miles on it.

Bill,

What exactly are you disagreeing with  ? Your post doesn't make sense to me.

Mike

Jim Maxwell 10-21-2003 04:21 AM

The broadcast sheet is there under the dash, still taped to the wiring harness. I didn't remove it. The body buck tag shows the AC code for air conditioning. I have photos of the oil cooler in place, and will post them to the same site late this evening.
Thanks for all the help! Jim

mrmustang 10-21-2003 04:26 AM

That there were no AC equipped KR 4spds...........Having owned two of them (ok, one real, and one a parts car), I can personally attest that they do indeed exist. A quick trip to the Marti's Autoworks web page, and a drop of $49.95 for a Deluxe report on the VIN will show that this car is legit as well. Sorry, I usually quote what I am replying to...Must have missed that one this morning..............

See, there's where the confusion comes in. Tout didn't say Ford never built KR's with 4 sp and A/C:

Maybe you misread his original post (?). Regardless, now I understand what you are saying--the same thing Tout said.
