Turk,
I don't know if I have enough posts to qualify for non-tacky status. Could you let me know?

Congratulations to the seller and buyer. I am realizing that I will never be able to own an actual Cobra at this point. I am also realizing that I will also never own a Hemi Cuda, L88 Corvette, Ferrari, Yenko, Baldwin/Motion Camaro and on and on..........
Prices are just going crazy these days. I don't know if this is good or bad, I have some old cars but to acquire anything else just takes such a hit on the pocketbook.
I think that a replica Cobra is a very good way to go.

There have been a rash of people having thier Ebay accounts hacked, and the hackers buy cars, watches, boats, etc.
It's a pain in the butt. Hopefully this guy is for real.

Richard, I hope you have a solid transaction this time...
...but, I gotta tell ya, if you haven't had numerous phone conversations with this bidder before closing ( on an item of this magnitude ), I wouldn't get your hopes up.

I haven't seen a 428 Cobra for years and years. Nobody, but nobody wanted them when they were new, except poseurs and the seriously uninformed. Who wants one today? Nobody.
Sure, there were many non-side oiler 427 Cobras. Not easy to tell which was or wasn't installed from the thinnly documented factory records.
SA was "discreet" in not bothering to mention either 427 vs 428 or side-oiler availability or tunnel-port intake and heads, except on race cars. Most dealers didn't have a clue and took what was shoved at them. If they did discover any variances, they certainly didn't point them out to the potential buyer.
Some would say "misleading." Even "fraudulent." But, that would make me unkind, wouldn't it?
Or am I being too picky for expecting a 427 Cobra to contain a 427 engine, rather than a 428?
This was not a minor issue in the day amongst the cognicenti and torqued a lot of loyal customers off big time when they discovered the switcheroo, about which they could do and did nothing. As a result of this and other wacko SA blunders, many cars remained unsold for quite a while. But eventually they were all shifted when Remmington (?) suggested the S/C approach.

Small correction to an unintended impression. I should have said, "who wants an original Shelby 427 CSX chassis today with a 428 in it?"
Because, a well-turned 428 today, with the correct bits, makes a great powerplant for many of the kits while keeping the budget more affordable. In fact, even a proper 390 is jolly good power when breathed upon.
Otherwise...

As anal-retentive as this bunch can be at times, I find it exceedingly curious that NO ONE has made mention of the fact that the speedo installed in CSX 3245 is a Km/Hr instrument that tops out at 270???
As always YMMV; I cast no aspersions as this is merely an observation.

Doug

I thought that was rather odd, the speedo thing. WONDERFUL pictures and a nice reference point for the street cars. I saved ALL those pics!
As usuall, Shelby was ahead of his time using 428's in a 427 Cobra. What a guy! In the years that followed that, and today, theres no telling WHAT engine you might find under WHAT hood.
Yup, Shelby set the trend in that regard.
I suspect the car is NOT "spot on" to accuracy but sure appears to be "very" correct. For instance, I wonder if the original overflow (radiator) tank was blue, not black, as it is now.

Yeah, I suppose the ERA's do. For a STREET car blue is correct as I suspect black is also? It's an interesting example of the some of the details that were lost along the way with so many "restorations". Making a truly original (NON RESTORED) car extremely rare.
My ERA is probably like many others, a "mix" of street and S/C layout. "Correct" street dash layout (for instance) BUT street cars never came with side pipes! The dual fours are correct but at least SOME street cars came with a single four barrel.
I'm missing the "correct" Austin Healey ash tray and cigarette lighter. Which I plan to correct shortly!

Besides the recent Chicago area find, how many are there?
When is the SAAC registry book being updated?

Yes, some street cars came with a single pumper vacuume secondary 4bbl, i think an 800/850 cfm. Then i recall refitting the latest Holley mod (circa 1968?), a 950, which was an 850 with the webbing between the front two barrels removed to create one humongous front opening.
But, the days of the double pumper had not yet arrived, so there was a mod that attached a Y tubing to the top of the rear primary bbls squirter tower which carried the accellerator fuel through two holes you had to drill in the choke horn forward. You inserted the tube assembly and had a double pumper of a sort when the ends of the Y squirted into the left and right side of the gapeing chasm of the 3rd bbl. You had to also increase the volume of the accellerator pump and there was a more abrupt cam for the lever arm that was required to make it work correctly coming out of the hole. And it was converted to mechanical secondaries, which worked perfect.
i had just gotten rid of a 427/435 tripower vette coupe that had two very nasty problems. First, the sidepipes drummed the coupe interior to death unless BOTH windows were down, not easy in NewEngland winters. i had just returned from the Quebec WinterCarnival and my ears are still ringing. And the first and last pair of carbs of the three were vacuume operated, but not reliably. They might not open immediately as you exited a corner until you hit a little bump, then they were both instant on! That car had enough power to light those dopy red-line Firestone tires at anything under 60 mph, so the car would quickly present itself sideways. Exciting, but not fun type exciting. Dicey type exciting, unpredictable type exciting.
The 950 on the Cobra however, took some jiggling, but when it was set up correctly, it worked just great along with a set of home fabricated equal-length headers and sidepipes and even thinner head gaskets. Very predictable. Very noticable power improvement, but as usual it soon faded into again not quite enough with a little useage and familiarity.
And now for a secret. Do you know what i used for street tires for years and years? HA! Firestone Indy rain race tires. They were perfect for the street because they never got that hot in the dry and were just super in the rain, New England remember? And the "racing only" was marked only on ONE SIDE, which somehow always ended up on the inside and conveniently not very visible. OK, they only lasted for about 4 or 5000 miles, maybe less, but so what? i tell you, no street car and few genuine race cars could even get close, except for ultimate top speed, which Cobs were not so super at. Off a cliff they would only do just 155-160 with those fat butt fenders in the rear and a windshield. On the track, just over 165 a bit.
For weekend events, spare Halibrands and Goodyear Sports Car Specials were de rigeur, of course.

Just a minor point. The 289 Cobras DID come with "matching number" engine blocks. The engine block number was stamped on the AC identification tag along with the car serial number. I have access to several 289's with their original engines and matching numbers. The big block cars did not list an engine number.
I would like to think that an original Cobra with it's orginal 428 would be desirable (since I have one in the garage), but, I know that it is not as sought after as a true 427 car. Whether its more desireable than a 428 car that now has a 427 is in the eye of the beholder. I prefer the originality, but a real 427 under the hood would certainly add something to many folks, I think.

Is it just me or does that next to last picture show a shifter knob from a 5 speed? You can make out the pattern but not the numbers.
Darn nice lookin car.
