Here is a link to make it a bit easier to view...

I've always admired someone who is willing to sell without a reserve. Takes a real leap of faith.

Good luck!

I'm confused. It's a no reserve auction but the seller reserves the right to end the auction at any time because he is taking offers.

So, what if I DID win the e-bay bid but it was less than somebody offered outside of e-bay and I couldn't buy the car as a result?

It is against e-bay policy to do such a deal, offer on e-bay and then stop the auction and sell outside of e-bay.

It appears that there really IS a "reserve" of at least 25K, matching the "local" offer he all ready has. If no one bids over $25K on e-bay, he simply stops the sale on e-bay.

Now when the Kirkhams offer a no reserve car for auction it is perfectly clear what that means. The ARE going to sell the car to the highest E-BAY bidder, for $1 if thats the highest bid!

Something aint right with this Shell Valley auction............

Ernie,

It's a sales ploy that happens more and more on Ebay these days...Wait until the last hour of the "no reserve" auction, then pull the plug and cancel the bids saying the car is no longer for sale, when in fact, it gets relisted a month down the road under another user name. Like the Kirkhams, I've done a number of "no reserve" auctions...Each one went off without a hitch, each one brought me more than it normally would due to last minute (as in the last two-three minutes) bidders.......To each his own.........Like you, I do not agree with this type of tactic...if the seller has an offer of 25K, then perhaps that buyer should be bidding on Ebay.............

Real Auctions are No Reserve Auctions!

In my opinion, a No Reserve Auction show you what you item is worth in realistic value. Like Bill S. said more people lately have been using the No Reserve Auction as a sales ploy though and the owner gets cold feet before the auction ends. Then, relist later with a reserve under another user name.

An auction with a reserve is not an auction at all but, a sell price that the owner will take for it plus any extra he can get because he does not know what it is worth.

I have bought two cars off of eBay auctions in the past (a Volvo no reserve and a Dodge Truck with a reserve). The one thing I am amazed with about Cobra eBay auctions are the way so many never meet the reserve price. The owners have a much higher value on their Cobras then, the general nationwide public is willing to pay.

Anyway, I guess I will fall for this game again and bid on this Cobra. I just hope this once this owner does not disappoint me and pull the auction early.

maybe i should have made the ad a little more clearer. the person who made the offer will be bidding on the car. i am actuallly taking a risk here because it could sell for less.
Less than what??? If he's really bidding, let's see his bid on ebay. If it really is a NO RESERVE auction, then go ahead and auction the car and take the highest bid. Sure, you're taking a risk; you take a risk any time you don't set a reserve. The Kirkhams took a risk when they sold their cars, too. But don't advertise: "no reserve" and then whine about taking a risk.

Your ebay ad says this is a binding contract but you reserve the right to take an off-ebay offer and end the auction whenever you want? So the bidder is bound but not the seller???

"The carb is tunned by Gregg's Performance Auto to produce a very deep growl that will have you grinnin from ear to ear." Hmm... I wonder whether Gregg could tune my carb to produce a deeper growl. I mean, it's deep already but if I could have a VERY deep growl, it might be worth having him do.

"The clutch assembly at the slave cylinder needs just a couple of turns to make it a little tighter. This is very simple and can be done in just 5 minutes. I have kept it this way to keep it from peeling out everytime." Say WHAT??? Is THAT what causes my tires to squeal???

100% feedback on 6 items? And nothing since last November so none of the items is verifiable. Wow! Pretty impressive ebay record!

Going back for your MBA, huh? Because Marketing isn't working for you?

This all sounds like horsesh!t to me. Is it just Cobras or are these guys trying to peddle other cars with this crap, too?

Might be easier if you start the bidding at the lowest price you will take. That helps end the mystery right then and there about a reserve price. My 2 cents worth.

Another scam is the seller or his friend makes up another eBay account and bids on it himself. You can usually tell because the other eBay account will have either a no feedback or a few feedbacks.

You have to think, how many people that have never bid on anything off of eBay are going to be trusting enough to buy a $25,000.00 car off of eBay on thier first auction?

Well that cleared it up for me. I now assume that the highest bidder on e-bay really will be able to buy the car, at whatever that high bid price is. Perhaps far less than $25K? Time will tell.

I think thats all any of us wanted to know as it was not clear previoulsy.

,,, I have been known to raise a bid from $25K to something a little higher. But last time I did that I caught hell over it.

As we have been mentioned a couple of times here, I figured I'd fill everyone in on some of our ebay experiences.

No Reserve:

Well, that is simply Kirkham policy. I have downed TUMS a couple of times during the last few minutes of some of our auctions. If the car only sells for 1 dollar, then too bad--we better find a different line of work, (just ask SFCJ on what kind of a car he stole...)

We have overall been quite happy with ebay. I know there are problems, but we have found that the No Reserve auctions usually bring the best money.

As for selling it before the auctions ends...(no slam intended here) we just don't view that as a no reserve auction. (Others may have thier opinion, of course, and that is fine.)

To us, it starts at 1 dollar and goes where ever it goes. That said, we have sold quite a few cars for OVER retail price. Maybe it is because the buyer knows exactly what he is getting and there is little drama involved or negotiation on who knows what.

In all of the auctions we have run, we have only had 1 car not sell. That was a car that was listed at a "Buy it now" price...and no one bought it now. Of course, that car later sold to a guy who didn't want to buy it off of ebay, but had called us several times during the auction. As such, we didn't relist the auction or complain to ebay to get any of our money back. Of course, many of you here are very familiar with that car as it precipatated our New Year's Special which netted us many, many sales.

Maybe that is why we usually get good money on our auctions. The public knows what they are getting and don't have to worry we won't deliver.

David, alright, you've talked me into it. I'll buy one of your cars for $1. Heck, I'll even put my car on Ebay for a buck to come up with the shipping costs.

(Then again, would I drive an aluminum Cobra every day like I do my plastic Cobra? Hmmmm..... yup, I think I would!)

Kirkhams bring good money on eBay because they have a following and everyone knows they will get a great car regardless of the price the car sells for. IE...the Kirkham family will not cut corners to deliver a "budget" product.

Default Ebay

Over here in Germany Ebay does not allow RESERVE-Auctions. If you need a certain amount for your item you have to make a STARTING BID at that price! I hate RESERVE-Auctions and don`t take part in them anymore because it`s like poking around in the dark, outcome unsure! Reserve not met! Bang. Wasted time.
