Interesting flares for a "1962" chassis.

It all looks pretty authentic. The registry talks about 2009 being in a pretty serious wreck, but was rebuilt with a new chassis. Maybe this guy has all the "leftover" parts. The cowl hoop support tubes (on each side of the transmission) should be 3/4" and these appear to be 1" or so. Why change those? And that differential doesn't look like any Cobra diff I have seen.

Is this perhaps an interrupted "Ace to Cobra" resurrection and conversion?

As stated in the listing, a "209" stamping on the hinge would designate it as CSX2209.

CSX2209 has virtually no history in the last registry, indicating that s/n is "MIA"....

...but, 2209 would be rack and pinion, not worm and sector steering.

The real test would be a chassis number on the frame, but that hasn't been mentioned (as of yet) in the ad.

Right now, it look like an interesting pile of pieces.

When I saw it,I thought it was a Ace that had been modified. Seemed like the grill opening was unusual shape as well as the flares, who knows. Definitely was an oddball.

So, in the end, what's it worth? If its real but the s/n has been transplanted, is it worth anything?

An interesting replica though!!

Worm and sector steering was only on the very early cars. At what number did that go away? I assume CSX2009 is accounted for, I would think a number THAT low would indeed be worm and sector.

Ernie,

According to Trevor Legate, Cobra (1984, p.52), rack-and-pinion was incorporated in lieu of worm-and-sector, from CSX 2126 onwards, so first 126 had that.

as with most things that float to the surface on ebay. With all due respect

A few things strike me about this car. The boot (trunk...sorrry!) opening looks too long, like an Ace, but if it had worm & sector steering, the column should be height adjustable? The stamping doesn`t look right for a 2*09, could it be 209* or *209 or possibly BEX209(an Ace type serial no.?) I`ll check my Ace registers later!
Also, the arches look so wrong at the front, if it still had wire wheels, and the vents...TOO HIGH!
It does look old though.
I wonder why "The seller ended this listing early because the item is no longer available for sale. " Caveat Vendor perhaps?

I don't see anything here that says "Cobra" to me, but I see a lot that says "Ace." The hinges for the hood/ trunk are totally incorrect for a Cobra, as is the steering and the front end. And the door hinges appear to be brand new, with a coat of primer. Forty year old hinges are usually covered with multiple coats of paint. Plus, if the doors were off 2209, they would be stamped "2209" rather than "2 09". As for the alloy body, forget it - I don't think it's salvageable.

I note that an AC Ace, chassis number BEX 209, was last known to be in Los Angeles (right near Toluca Lake, where the eBay seller is located) but has disappeared from sight. Coincidence?

agreed, looks like its 1956 (or so) AC Ace. The body is completely wrong, the trunk, nose, and side vents, are all the wrong shape.

If the seller had a title for the car, it would state what it was. Since he professes not to know exactly what he has beyond "an AC," it's pretty clear he's got no title. Which suggests the car's got no VIN, otherwise - again - he'd have a clue as to what he was selling. So I'm guessing what we have here is a pile of parts with no VIN and a "bill of sale." Run, don't walk, away from this deal.

Sidebar: a friend who called to ask about this car contacted the seller, who told him "I've just blown it out for only $75,000. Shoulda brought more." Can't wait to hear from the reputed "buyer" on this transaction.
