I'm with you JD, first time buyer should go with something easy to maintain and easy to drive.
Former ASE certified mechanic here, I do ALL my own work. I wonder if I would go with an FE if I didn't? :D Changing the clutch out soon (going to 12"), repaired the sticking trans shifter, replaced the starter, did substantial work on the IRS, did extensive work on the dual carbs, pulled the radiator and and soldered a hole, adjusted the solid lifters. The list goes on, the car was built in '86! I get a kick out of working on them, if you don't, keep it simple and get a newer one! |
Thanks for all your input. I bought the car and will be picking it up Saturday.

What did you buy?

The car is an ERA # 203. that was built in 1988 so has some miles on it. The 428 engine is fresh with less than 500 miles, I am told should produce about 550 hp by the engine builder?? Transmission needs some work (no second gear) The black Imron paint looks like new. I am looking forward to getting it up to snuff and driving it all summer. I will attach pictures when I get them.

As for 427 SOs and originality: I doubt any of the CSX 3000 series ever came with one. Mine (CSX 3121) had a top oiler, and as stated earlier, Shelby switched to the 428 mid way in the production of the big block cars.

Top oiler before Side Oiler, which came out in 1965 and I think '66 was the last year, except for "industrial" applications? A very rare and short lived motor to be sure. I would expect Shelby had access to the earliest engines available at the time. Possibly a "64" side oiler?
An interesting question: How many and which Cobra had the side oiler? The comp cars I would think. Certainly the GT-40's that ruled LeMans! Easy to mistake a top oiler for a side oiler, they both have certain traits in common. |
