What has DMV given you as the specific reason(s) that your car was not California legal?

I need to know as I'm shopping for one to register in California.

Thanks,

Steve

Randy,
I am also sorry to hear about the sale of your car. I have seen it on numerous occasions and it is a beautiful car. I am glad to hear that your California Registration problems did not sour you on Cobra ownership and that you will do it AGAIN.

This will make someone in the other 49 states a fine car.

There is some silver lining in all this madness. For those who pursued and prevailed in getting their cars legal in California, pretty soon there will be a substantial premium placed in the value of a Cobra that IS California legal.

It will be worth it for folks to buy one that is ready to go, in California without the DMV gymnastics.

Good luck in the sale....

Will you do another SPF?

TURK

Pardon me for not being up to speed on the CA-DMV issues. Just curious, if this car were titled in another state, would you be able to move to California with the car and not have problems?

Hi Steve,

The DMV told me that my SPF was illegally manufactured, since there was no separation between the purchase of the "kit" and labor to assemble it (aka: it was purchased turnkey, even though I provided the drive train to the assembler). The DMV also told me that I would be receiving a full written explanation of the details, however since then the CA State AG's office has gotten the DMV to agree that my SPF was not built for resale, therefore no letter has been sent (to my knowledge) or received. In addition, since the DMV doesn't consider my SPF as a Specially Constructed Vehicle either, the status of my SPF's title is in limbo. Regardless whether my title is in limbo or flat out denied, I can't drive it, and so I've chosen to sell it and hope to purchase another.

Let me know if you have any further questions...ok?

Thanks,
Randy R...

Hi Turk,

Thanks for your compliments!

The absolute best part of my experience of owning a Cobra is the people and the relationships that I've developed. It's not uncommon to hear in the BACC that, "it's not the Cobras, it's the people - the Cobras just brought the people together". With or without a Cobra, I'm still a member of the BACC.

I've always dreamed of owning a Cobra, and I've been blessed with the ability to own one for a while. Not many people in this world can say that they were able to live one of their dreams.

With respect to another SPF, I have always liked the philosophy behind the product that SPF markets. I'm attracted to the consistent quality and continuous product improvements that separate SPF from all other "roller only" Cobra Replica manufacturers. When I purchased my first Cobra, it was 1999, and at that time SPF really stood out as a leader in this market. They still do, and at the same time others have entered the market differently (Kirkham comes to mind) with a different (not better, not worse) product.

Thanks,
Randy R...

Hi Steve,

Good question.

The answer is no. The VIN number of my SPF is currenly flagged in the DMV database as being "unregisterable". So, if one were to buy my SPF, title and register it in another state, and then move to CA, then the CA DMV still would deny registration.

Honestly, I've thought of this, but in reality this is exactly what Titling Services do in to order to establish title for an untitled VIN number, and I don't think I want to go down that route (again).

Let me know if you have any further questions...ok?

Thanks,
Randy R...

Randy, Perhaps my question wasn't completely clear. Take California out of the equation initially. Lets imagine that you lived in another state and were buying your car as is from the same suppliers, brand new. Your work transfered you to the great state of California. Could you take your car with you and register it with the CA-DMV?

Default You have my sympathy!

Randy:

I had a bad feeling about this one. DMV put you in a no win situation. I know how easily we become attached to a car that we sweat over, sort out, dial in, and enjoy, as I know you did your car.

FYI: I guess I won't need your slicks after all. Yesterday I bought a 65 A code Fastback. Sooner or later it will be a GT350 R Replica for the track.

Good Luck!

Steve,

I'm not 100% sure of your question, but let me say this...

If I live outside of CA and owned a Cobra (built just like mine) *AND* it had a valid and legal title from the "non-CA" state in which I resided, and then I moved to CA, then, YES, CA would accept the title - CA may make me go thru SB100 to possibly change the title to CA's liking, but YES, CA would accept it.

There are a few members of our BACC who have purchased used (already titled) Cobras from out of the state, and have very successfully had them registered in CA.

If this doesn't help, then email me your phone number so we can talk...ok? I can listen/talk much better than I can read/type

Regards,
Randy R...

Randy, pretty car and I see you updated the thread to encourage trades. Certainly someone from the other 48 states (excluding HI) would help one of their own.

randy ,some states have a procedure to register cars built completly from parts. if the vehicle has never been registered in any state, appears to be a kit type car, has no vin plate ,the owner states he built it ,the state will assign a vin and attach a vin plate&issues a title that every other state will accept.a po box a street address & a week in one of these states would much less expensive than your other solutions.most statesonly reason for being in the registration business is to collect fees &stop the sale of stolen cars.its your car!!! in almost every state except ca.
