Getting bolt on wheels on my ERA. Two reasons: (1) the original Shelby Cobra (which this one is patterned after) that I saw in 1967 for sale ($3300) had 5 spoke wheels - not sure what make, maybe Cragers, but looked exactly like the "D"s. (2) lots of the early cars had the spoked wheels. ERA even advertises its 289 with "Ds" (web site 2nd picture).
Considered wire wheels but don't want the maintenance. Considered Halibrands but too much like "cookie cutters."
Might not have the most admirers (the Ds) but that's the first Cobra I saw/almost bought, so it's not like it wasn't an option on the originals.

The BDR wasn't given to anyone. The winner received a $5000 credit toward the $20,000 purchase price rather than the car since the number of tickets sold was not enough to buy the car from BDR and give half the proceeds to the charity.

A couple of points that I might mention.

Being a previous Vette owner and Vette racer I was used to a car that handles well. You being a previous Vette owner as well might fall into the same scenario. So when I decided to buy a Cobra recently I ended up purchasing a Backdraft (which has the BMW independent front and rear suspension) also mine has the 351W based 392 stroker 430 horse motor which I love! It's just the right size and weight for a car like this if you want power and still have a car that handles well.

SO, I guess it depends on what you are going to do with your new Cobra. If your just going to drive and show it then the BIG blocks are neat but don't often handle as well as one with a lighter wieght block. If you're going to REALLY play with it then you might seriously consider the Backdraft BDR, especially since Reg Dodd's Classic Cars who builds the BDR is located right in your back yard. Pembroke Pines, FLORIDA.

Take a look at mine if you like. I love it. It's a LOT of car for the money. And NO I don't work for BDR (as I have been accused of lately and not a RINGER for them either. They just build one hell of a fine car.)

karfever, I would ignore the "walk away" comments. It's human nature for everyone on a web group to spout negativity when someone is looking for a car. It sounds like the ERA is a good possibility. Every car you look at will have things you might want to change. If I were looking at the car I would put it on a lift and see what kind of parts they used underneath, things like did they use an old Jag rear and replace things like rotors and bushings or did they use as is. Are the suspension bolts all the same high grade or did they mix and match. I would try to get a feel for how methodical they were during the build. ERA also has a nice optional rear with upper and lower control arms that I would jump all over. If you can take some pics I would be happy to offer my opinions.

Interesting pair of ebay listings for that car...

In the first one davis1967 chases it up to 29K. Then the auction is ended 'early' after being listed for over 9 days?

It is curious it took the seller 9 days+ to determine there was a error with his reserve or minimum bid amounts??

Then in listing #2, davis1967 ups their previous ante an immediate 10K by hitting buy it now within 24 hours of the new listing's appearance.

AND all this occurs while we know karfever had an appointment to see the car on Weds the 17th. Coincidentally the same day the second listing appeared.

The lister has zip for feedback. Davis1967 has all of one from a company that sells women's handbags, while karfever is sporting an impressive 289 positive items of feedback.

I'd sure like to know how all this shook out?

Okay, here is the scoop. Scoped this car out for a friend and repeat customer. It met his particular requirements. A deal and terms were reached without delay. Auction was closed since the Buy-It-Now option expired for use. It was listed again with a Buy-It-Now overnight for anyone to bid on. Nice Car. Fair price. No scam. He bought it. Done deal. As they say, Less Talk, More Rock! Good Luck, there will be more that come along.

Mike-you really need to watch what you're "insinuating".9 out of 10 ERA's have Pin-drives.I grew up in New Britain.So i think in know a thing or two about them.By the limited description,something seemed amiss.And the car appeared very much to be an "unknown".Thankfully,it turned out well in the end.But a lot cobra transaction go south.You have a Superformance-which is a "known entity".You didn't have this problem when you purchased your car.You were fortunate.

and please keep your phsyco-babble/analysis to your self.

I"ve bought 2 cars on eBay - you get what you pay for! I bought a 64 VW Beetle which was true to it's picture but not true to the description. I bought a 74½ MGB-GT also, but we went to pick it up and got to see it BEFORE we handed over the check!

Caveat Emptor - Let the buyer beware!
