Default Seeking Original '62-'64 COBRA project car

Looking for an original CSX2000 series car to restore in any condition. Prefer complete or disassembled whole car needing repair/total restoration, but will consider original chassis as well.

This will probably cost upwards of $150,000, just for a rolling wreck! But I will check my sources......unfortunately, my main source is out of town til mid February.

But the cars ARE out there; its that they rarely come up for sale, and even more rarely for PUBLIC sale!

There are people who spend half their waking hours searching for original Cobras as "projects". I know of cases where upwards of $50K was paid for a 289 frame with a serial number stamped in it and a pile of assorted, rusty junk that once were Cobra bits and pieces.

Good luck on the quest... they are out there, although few and far between.

This pile o'parts, together with the skins and the correct frame, as well as the rest of the parts, sans engine, sold a while back for...well,...more than that '66 is worth. (...sigh)

How much was the selling price for the basket case? Was this a small block or big block chassis?

You might want to check the value of your GT350...as of recently a rotisserie restored non-wrecked car is pushing the upper 70's....
and at 80K...the COBRA is were I expected it to be...some have sold for less as basket case cars (60K) others more (85K)....this seems typical.

wcampbell, I really don't think you'll find what you are looking for anytime soon. There are a zillion people ahead of you looking for the same thing, and the Cobra community is pretty close. Like someone already said, a car like this for sale would not likely EVER see a public advertisement. I gaurantee that if someone posted a legit reply in this thread to a car like that for sale, it would be sold well before you ever read the reply.

Would you consider a 427 car, or are you set on a 260/289 car? I've seen more 427s in bad shape than small block cars, but you'd still probably pay 150-200k for a basketcase 427 car.

Does it HAVE to be original? You can buy an aluminum 289 Slabside or FIA car from Kirkham, built on the 427 chassis. If you sold your GT-350, you could probably have a finished car with that money going the Kirkham route. Just another option.

Sorry fellas...but I was hoping for something old and in pieces...I like the history and all....I figured if a guy has a car in pieces that hasn't run in say 15-20 years; maybe even missing the drivetrain he may be interested in a near concours GT350 or some extra cash...I could built own from scratch or order a new one, but it wouldn't be the same to me....

In the past three years, I've only run across two (both small block street cars) such restoration projects, one sold for a hair over $70,000 (spring of 2002), the other went for over 100K (August of 2004), both were 90% complete, both needed total restorations......The market has changed quite a bit from the days of old where you could find a 100% complete car for under $60,000, and be into it with restoration for under $100,000. I do wish you the best of luck in your search...............

While I agree with everything above, unless there is another depression and I somehow become very wealthy and hold onto my money during said depression, there ain't no way I am going to be able to afford the real thing. (Unless there is one in the thousands of barns here in Berks County but SAAC started down the road from me, so I guess thats out the window.)

However, if and when I finish this car, I will have the next best thing to a real one. The scratch built route works for me as I can pay as I go.

On another note, I just ordered a bunch of stuff from AMP and I'll post it when I receive it.
