What kind of a Shelby is an R+?

moneymanager 06-18-2005 12:32 PM

I am assuming you haven't taken a look at my website. Your answer lies there....

HISTORY of the 65 Shelby GT350 "R"

There were a special group of race prepared Shelby GT 350's called "R" models. For 1965 of the first 115

cars, only 16 were built as the GT350R, racing version. Winning a B - Production title essentially meant owning

a Shelby GT350R. Five of the six SCCA B-Production regional titles were won by these cars and in the

finals 7 of the top 10 places were won by Shelbys. By years end, a total of 562 1965 Shelby GT350's

had been built.

Each GT350R one was basically hand built by Carroll Shelby and his team, in an old airplane hanger

in California. They were ordered from Ford with the following items "deleted": carpet, headliner, side glass

and rear windows, door panels, original gas tank and bumpers. Then Shelby did their magic to them. He

gave notice to all Corvette racers that "the only time a Corvette would see Victory Lane would be if a Shelby

GT350 wasn't in the race". The "R" models were never sold to the general public.

Shelby expanded into a larger production facility for the 1966 year. Sales were expanded and Hertz

ordered 1000 Shelbys to rent at a premium to members of the Hertz Sports Car Club. These were older,

respectable and wealthy regular car renters who were allowed to rent Corvettes as an incentive to maintain

their business. With the purchase of the Shelby's, they had a choice. Since the Hertz order was 40% of

the 1966 production total of 2380 cars, the Hertz cars carried special equipment, color schemes, and Vin

numbers. All but 230 were produced with black exteriors and interiors and gold striping which included the

special GT350H designation. All but 85 cars had automatic transmissions. Hertz rented the car for $17.00

per day and 17 cents per mile. Most of the Hertz cars were used for fast street driving, however there are

many stories about renting the cars for weekend racing, hence the name "Rent-A-Racer."The First chapter

of the early model Shelby Mustangs closed with the end of the 1966 production run. In total there were

only 37 Shelby "R" models and it is estimated that only 32-34 of them remain in existence today.

The 1965 Shelby GT350R Mustang was the most race worthy of all the Shelby's ever produced,

including the famous big-block Cobra's! At a price of $4,000 in 1965, the standard GT350 (not an "R"

model) was not a hot seller. A buyer had to be a real car enthusiast because these cars were basically a

factory built race car, right off the showroom floor. The 1965 Shelby GT350R has become probably the

most significant vintage American race car in recent history. Hence the legend of the 1965 Shelby GT350

was born.

The most recent sale of a REAL 1965 Shelby GT350R is reported to have fetched $250,000.00

Mine can be bought for less than that! And it's even faster....

I'm kinda familiar with the GT350R..

..so, what kind of a Shelby is an R+?

arctic-snake 06-18-2005 12:37 PM

most of us know what a shelby "R" stands for. It is the "R+" that is not familiar.

moneymanager 06-18-2005 12:42 PM

+ MORE HORSES
+ NITROUS
+ A/C
+ 5 Speed
+3" exhaust
+++++++++++++++++++++++
to much to list here. Take a look at my website and the MUSTANG ENTHUSIAST magazine article for more details.

Thanks for asking,
"Doc"

Now this is priceless!

MM, CW probably knows more about Shelby history than Shelby remembers accurately.............

Bill Wells 06-18-2005 07:27 PM

R = Restomod...in this case..nicely done at that. Bill

Cashburn 06-18-2005 08:03 PM

I believe it really should be a +/-

Yeah, now you all can become familiar with the Doc eveyone on the Mustang sites "loves" ...

Cal Metal 06-18-2005 08:12 PM

A VIN number would be appreciated.

ALLEN ENGLISH 06-18-2005 09:30 PM

That's a very nice looking clone of a Shelby R you have Doc. Many years ago I had started to build a fake R model for myself, I just love the old GT 350's. On mine I actually started with a 1965 9" rear end from a wrecked 65' GT 350 and bought many other original Shelby parts for it as well. I was young and never finished the car and eventualy sold everthing. I'm sure you have a ton of money tied up in your Mustang. How much have you decided to sell it for?

Again very nice!

Cashburn 06-19-2005 06:33 AM

Oh don't get him started on the cost... please, please. That's another adventure in creativity ...

John McMahon 06-19-2005 07:22 AM

a clone is just a clone is just a clone.

turnpike boy 06-19-2005 08:13 AM

Hey, the guy has owned 105 cars.

How can he be expected to remember if it's just a clone?

I was just curious about his pricing. I would say that 45k maybe 50k would be about right for a nice k car clone these days. Heck we would spend that much or more on a replica cobra. **) Though the way he has it advertised you would think he expects over 100k for it.

Why don't we just post what we think a car like that is worth? ( I did) I'm not trying to give the guy a bad time about the sale of his Mustang. Really!!

Doc,

Very nice car and I think the site accurately states what the car is. I can never understand why everyone gets up in arms over reproduction vehicles. Many of us are unwilling to pay the price for a "real 1960s" Shelby GT 350R, 427 Cobra, GT40 etc. If we did they'd sit in the garage, most of the time, with the car cover on them. There are a select few that actually drive or race them, but in their cases, money is most likely no object! The only thing I'd suggest is, you put the price you are asking for the car out there as anyone that is interested will know if it's worth their and your time, to pursue. Also, what trades would you consider.........

moneymanager 06-19-2005 09:58 AM

Recently a Mustang (Restomod- NOT an original 65 Shelby) badged as a 65 GT350SR manufactured by an unnamed company, sold at the Barrett-Jackson Auction in Scottsdale, Az. for $151,200.00 They retrofit a car similar to mine, with less horsepower, No 3" exhaust, No TKO trany, No NITROUS, No leather, No hydraulic clutch, No 5 point harness, No added insulation, No Spare, and minus several other features starting at $109,000.00. NOTE: they also start with a regular, plain, 65 Fastback Mustang! NOT a real 65 Shelby GT350!

No mine is NOT an original 65 Shelby either, and I've never tried to pass it off as one. It's better than that. It's the car Carroll Shelby would have built if he had todays modern technology and improvements available. I've owned REAL and Original numbered cars and I can assure you this one exceeds them all, in every way! "Available for a realistic price of $63,750. No tax, no auction hype or fees, no profit to the builder. Just more car for less money! If anyone wants one of the 37 original "R" model 65 GT350's then step up and pay 4X more money at $250,000 for a car you can talk about but can't drive and enjoy!

Ready to play when you are! Cruise, race, show or otherwise.12.96 sec @ 112 in the Quarter mile. 16 mpg on a 5,000 mile road tour to Nashville, TN for the 40th Mustang Anniversary celebration. One of the most photographed & video'd cars on the Mustang's Across America tour.

No expense was spared on this car, nothing forgotten or shortcut taken. This car is RIGHT and has proven it time and again. It looks, feels & sounds better, rides, handles and runs better, and has more power. A true dream to drive and enjoy. Cruises easily at ANY speed you've got guts enough to run it at.

Not a "trailer or garage queen", nor a pure show car, yet it has stacked up MANY 1st Place awards over the last 3 years. Proven to hold it's own on the drag strip or in shows against REAL numbered Shelby's and others. A car built to use any way you want and enjoy it's awesome power. With only 7,800 miles on it since the engine was installed. It's been dialed in, well sorted out and proven reliable. Ready to go when you are.

Why am I considering selling it? Simple. I've enjoyed this car immensely but it's time to go onto the next one. This is my 105th car and I'm ready for something different. Other cars I MIGHT consider (I haven't fully decided if I will or not): VIPER, awesome street rod, or other possible exotics. Valued either UP or DOWN. After owning as many fine cars as I have, it's getting harder and harder to find something better or more fun than this one.

My personal GUARANTEE! If everything I've said about this car isn't true or if you don't like it, once you've driven it, the deals off. Money back! I don't need to sell or trade it. I can assure you, this car will always remain as one of my favorites, regardless of what "name" some people chose to call it.
