Default SB 100 Question

I am at the last stage of getting my Unique registered as an SB100 Car. The referee was kind enough to list my Cobra as a 1960. My question is can anyone give me any feedback as to what value the SB100 adds to the car, if any? I'm probably gonna work on selling the car shortly and am unsure of the value. I figure the car was worth about 30K without the SB100.
Any help would be appreciated.

well given the grief the process seems to create in otherwise self confident, successful people here in Club Cobra I'd guess it's worth quite a bit... $5-7.5K???

I caution you, cars created for resale are ineligible to be registered as sb-100 cars. perhaps you meant to say you are interested in selling your car for academic or a politically correct reason, like saving gas, trees paper or helping schools or are going to use the money to help elect a Democrat in an upcoming election.

This will surely cater favor among the neo-com agents who prowl these pages looking for infractions for which they can bust you on...

Imagine if you will the first Monday in Jan. 200x, SB100 cars which sell, the buyers registration gets pulled and revoked with no replacement number issued... exponential.

Someone should ask Morgenster (?) about that idea.

1)Thanks! I've had the car for 4 or more years, and the thought has crossed my mind on a few different occasions. But I havent been able to bring myself to do it.

2)Guns Have but two natural enemies... Rust and Liberals. Both are easily defeated. Amen! Gun control is hitting what your aiming at!

3) Just for the record, I endured the registration nazi's for one reason, I wanted to be able to make any engine mod or swap I wanted to, without having to get it oked by the Gestapo!!
But not knowing what your vehicle is worth, if somebody asked, is kind of embarrasing. But not nearly as embarrasing as getting beat by a 5.0 mustang cause you have to smog your car every couple of years! Its supposed to be a Cobra! If it cant get out of its own way, then whats the point????? My Sunbeam Tiger would have a 427-8 in it, If I thought it would fit!!!!!!

What if I wanted to sell the car to buy a better Cobra?? I think they all should be smog exempt! The belief that my hot rod cars are contributing to the rapid demise of the enviroment is a bunch of tree huggin B.S.!!! We are just soft targets. There are a helluva lot bigger fish to fry out there!

Its unfortunate that the left works non stop trying to erode the liberties that our ancestors gave there lives for. Like the liberty to sell my car if I so desire.........

I did not intend to be mean. This has more to do with the intent and rules specified by SB100 and the hope that SB100 is never seen as an abuse or loophole, thusly revoked.

"Specially constructed vehicles or 'kit cars' are defined as vehicles specifically built for private use, not for resale, and not constructed by a licensed manufacturer or re-manufacturer."

I stupidly believe that I am going to be able to secure a number Jan. 2nd.

I think the system stinks. I am just bitter that due to certain individuals in the kit car industry, I was not able to obtain a number in 2002 before they opened up the eligibility and presently the competition for a '06 number.

I agree.
I also missed the first year I decided to try for a sb100.
Dont give up. The DMV takes appointment a month in advance.
I made my mine for 8:30 the first day they were open for the new year. The lady told me the count was already at 35, so they go quick!! If you need any help in the process let me know.

It's a smart move to get an SB-100 number for your car if you plan on selling now or in the future.

The "no re-sale" clause is to keep "dealers" from acquiring the number solely for re-sale purposes. In Hawaii your a "dealer" if you change titles more than five times a year.

to answer your question, yes I do wish you could do that, or moreso transfer/buy anything you want regardless of some arbitrary MPG/ emission standard. Unfortunatly asinine lawmakers (EPA/Air Resources Board/Ahnold/Susan Anderson/ etc. (this list could get REALLY long)) will subscribe to lobbyists, junk science, appeasment and hysteria (aka MONEY) hold the reigns.

SB-100 is the way to go... I was under the former system and getting my car smogged while not difficult was a pain in the a$$ ... Smogs here are $80 and done on a dyno. There was always the chance it wouldn't pass. (yes there were smog specs back in the day)

My local smog station had a dyno you needed to drive up onto on a set of ramps. The pipes would always drag. It was aweful.

My fear about SB-100 was we are now all on one neat little list. What big government giveth, it can taketh away. I offered Mr. Morgester 1000 rounds of 7.62x39 ammo to use to execute the BAR guys allegedy involved in crimes against the state in SoCal. I haven't heard from him, so I will keep those in case they pull all our titles. I seriously considered not going down to get an exemption.

I went through this process last fall. Got the vehicle designation on my registration changed from Aurora ('80s Canadian mfr) to "SPCN." Specially Constructed Vehicles qualify for the SB100. DMV does that.

I had my nose on DMV's glass door at 7:30AM Monday Jan 3. I had gone in earlier that week and rehearsed the process with a DMV clerk who said he'd be working that morning. When they opened at 8AM, he got on the phone to Sacto, and within 15 minutes had my assigned number. 009.

Do you remember what info the clerk had to give Sac to get a number? I plan to do the same thing this Jan! I will go in the week before for a 'dry run'!

Getting a sb100 # is simple if you follow the steps, if you fight it you loose. I had my car appraised by a liscensed appraiser.

Default steps...

The steps leading to issuance of the SB100 for my Aurora Cobra included the CHP visually confirming engine and vehicle VIN numbers (mine was EPA and DOT compliant in 50 states when built, so it had a 17-digit VIN), and paying the DMV the licensing fees. Without VIN numbers, they need some permanent number to identify the car and the engine. You apply in January at the DMV for the SB100, and you wait. Once the SB100 number is assigned, it's not over. In 3-4 weeks you receive notification of approval of the SB100 from Sacto, and you take that to the referee for a baseline emissions test to ensure it isn't a "gross polluter." The referee then adheres your SB100 permit or "BAR Sticker" somewhere under the hood. With that in place, the DMV can release your plates and annual reg sticker.

With this BAR sticker, your registration shows "SPCN" as vehicle name, and 1960 as production date, exempting your from annual emissions testing for the life of the engine or vehicle, whichever dies first.

I understand the "Steps" are farely easy to follow, but you have to have one of those 'rare' SB100 #'s first!

I'm trying to make sure I'm one of the 'Happy 500' in Jan.! Not one of the 'wait until next year, thousands'!

There was a discussion on this forum a short time ago re: the value of a Cobra's with SPCN/SB-100. As I recall, the consensus of those selling cars is that it didn't make a difference (guess it's a buyers market).

As for your Unique.... $30,000 sounds a bit on the low side. A professional appraisal might be the way to go.

Thanks for the thoughts. I always thought the car was worth 35ish, but had run into trouble with the lack of California registration. You live in Nor-Cal, If you thought of selling your Unique, where would you start? Are the Good Guys coming soon? We went last fall, what a show! A gal there was interested in trading me her late fathers original owner GT500 Mustang, Unfortunately after 3 weeks of talking her brother talked her out of it.

Doesn't Chico still have a classic car place down there? We had one here until a few years ago and they had an appraiser that did most of the cars around here.

They are all different, so what I would ask for mine may not be where you would start. I would ask somewhere in the mid $40's, however, I don't have any plans to sell. The Good Guys show is the end of August in Pleasanton - http://www.good-guys.com/events/even...?eventID=WCN05

The Chico Concours you have up there in September is pretty cool. Lots of nice rides from N. CA. This year's marquee is Ford Performance - From "T" to "GT".

Joe Cruse has a shop in town, kind of a consignment shop. I never thought of talking to him though. Good Idea! I see you live in Shasta lake. My folks live in lakehead, what a great neck of the woods!
