Harry is a dealer of exotics with many years experience. He is patient and will wait to find the right buyer. The last Excalibur that sold on ebay was VIN xxx075, with 6K miles. It went for $39,600. That was high; in the past several months I have seen three sell in the low to mid $30's, all real nice and low mileage. Haven't seen any sell for less than $32K. Harry probably thinks the fact that this is a documented one owner car picked up at the factory and VIN xxx177, supposedly the last regular production car delivered will push it up in the $40's. I'm not betting against Harry.
A point about the Excaliburs, they have a lot of features not usually found on kit cars, such as a VIN that allows insurance as a regular car without driving restrictions as to when, where or how much, heat and defrost, some (including xxx177) have Ford AC, tilt, real turn signals, washers and wiper controls and ignition on the steering column, sound system, integrated security system, Ford four wheel power disc brakes, quality top and side curtins and optional tonneau. The power train is straight 5.0 EFI Mustang (all but a couple of early ones) with Ford 9 inch or 8.8 solid rear axle. A few even were AOD's from the factory. In other words you can get it worked on by anybody who can work on a 5.0 Mustang and parts are pretty easy.
These characteristics appeal to some who want a cobra replica without the risk of having a custom car (insurance, reliability, serviceability) and some comforts, but it is not for those wanting the ultimate authentic 427 SC replica or a basic, no frills rocket ship. It can be a rocket ship if you are willing to do serious things to the drive train, suspension and brakes. Scott in Austin has one that races extremely well on road race courses. It ain't factory
Another thing about both the Excalibur and the Classic Roadster II (C427) I love is the extra passenger compartment room due to wider and longer stance. Still not a BMW sedan, but I fit without feeling like I'm on top of it rather than in it.
Depending on what your intended use is going to be and your preferences, it could be what you want. I have one and it fits me in every way. It's great to be able to actually drive it any time, anywhere, any weather and as much as I want. It is even comfortable (in a roadster way) on long trips (couple of hundred miles). I like being able to transfer all the 5.0 Mustang tech and hop ups to my car.
I believe there are some folks trying to start up Excalibur production again, but I do not believe these could possibly be complete cars meeting all safety, emissions and other certification for production cars as the originals were. There is a Classic Roadster forum on this site and you can find out more about the CR II cars there. I have to say, I pay attention to those guys as the cars really are very, very similar. Don and Pete at CR II have been a great help to me on supplying parts and information for my Excalibur. Even if I were building one for myself as a custom kit, I value the interior space and design quality of these cars so much that I would choose the C427 from CR II. You may insert the standard disclaimer here, I don't even get a discount at CR II. (Don, How'd I do?)
