428 fe
10 to 1
all edelbrock rpm
950 holley double pumper
msd mech advance
tko 600 with .82 fifth
3.50 rear end
450 hp / 500 tq

6mpg in town 12 hwy

These cars are not made for gas mileage, this is good as it gets with these cars and a big motor.

588 Cubic Inch - BBF 460 bored and stroked.
850 Quikfuel double pumper

7 MPG normal city driving - 6 MPG when having fun - 9 mph on the highway.

Make sure you're not running too rich.

Driving these cars is like throwing twenty dollar bills out the side.

You're fine - enjoy.

Roush 427 SR/TW, 512 HP, 10.5:1, 750 Holly, 3.46 rear with 17" wheels & 0.82 OD. I have averaged 13 MPG since purchase. Best was 15. I like to drive 5 over speed limits and expect when on it get close to 6-8. But really, how can you get on it that often when in a few seconds you are going 100 mph? Oh and that is on E10 (10% ethanol gasoline). I confess, I drive conservatively. If you can, take a road trip and drive reasonably. See what you get. It is pretty clear when you drive fast you get lousy mileage. In many ways, when you state your mpg, it is essentially measure of the way you drive.

I'm running a quiet little 428, Holley 750 double pumper, with a reasonably noisey cam from Comp. There is a TKO 600 behind it with a .82 fifth. I get about 10 MPG around town and 12.5 on the highway if I stay around 72 ro 73 mph. If I run it up to 95 (2500RPM), I can boost the mileage up to about 16.

Dan, what are you taching at 72 or 73? 1500? I've got a Roush 427 sr/tw with TKO 500 with .82 and I get 14 at 72 or 73 at 2600. I'm guessing but at 95 I'm doing 3200? Cliff

My 390/406 with Edelbrock intake and 750cfm Holley and 3.46 rear gets 10 around town....haven't had in on road trip yet. I probably could get better around town, but it's new to me and I love to punch it. Mileage never was an concern unless it becomes way out of normal for the setup!

482 Shelby engine
Just under 11:1 compression
Pro Systems 870cfm with mechanical secondaries
MSD Digital 6 Plus (no vacuum advance)
Toploader 4 speed with 3:31 rear

I seem to get between 6-7 mpg most of the time. Sometimes it seems like near 5 mpg when I have been on it for a while.

When people ask about my MPG, I just tell them it's kind of like flushing a toilet when you step on the GO pedal

I can't believe you're getting that low of mpg, with such a mild 390 ?

My last 428 was fairly mild, but higher than yours.

10.3 compression.
.060 over bore.
600 lift, 252-260 duration.
650 Mighty Demon carb.

16 mpg highway.
(no info on the street)

It at one time was around 11-12 mpg.
For the Hot Rod Power Tour, we ran it on the chassis dyno and went down 3 pill sizes, could have been 4 but, he did not have that jet.

I highly,......recommend putting it on a chassis dyno and see if you can adjust the fuel curve by going down on the jet size. It saved me a lot,.... of fuel.

I am no expert but I lot would depend on the way the 390 was set up. I had a rather wild one in my 67 mustang with a "vintage set up" big lumpy cam, 750 Holley, big heads, 12.5:1 compression, 4 speed toploader and I was lucky to get 7-8. It was almost unstreetable at idle but would run like a nashee with race fuel.

A friend of mine has the same car with a 5 speed, milder setup 390 with 10:1 and can get 16-18 mpg. I am very happy to get 10-12 in my Cobra with Roush 511 and 8 stack Fuel injection as a trade off to 600 hp and 620 of torque and it will idle all day long with out overheating.

427 side oiler with two four barrel holleys working together, I have given up on mileage numbers. I zero the trip odometer and fill the tank, when I see 80 miles I start looking for gas.

Dan, you would have to have a 2.64 rear end ratio to cruise at 2,000 RPM and 72 MPH! I have a very similar set up and at 2,000 RPM I'm at 55 MPH. I have 17" wheels, 3.46 rear end, 0.82 OD. Maybe the wheels are a lot different? I have 17 x 335-35R on the rear.

I'm not sure what your tire height is, but I've had issue with my speedo so I've tracked my car with a gps. At 2000 RPM a 3.56 differential, and 295-50 15 tires, I'm running at 72 MPH.. THe AZ DPS agrees with me.. He was surprised that the car ran so consisitantly and he appologized for stopping me, but he just had to ask.. "Is it real?"

I get 10 - 12 mpg with my 460. Barry Grant 750, vacuum secondaries and running 2.73 rear gears. Can run 80 - 82 in 5th gear at 2,000 rpm. Not that I've ever done that, but I've been told
