I got a virgin
I just got back from Spokane picking up my brand new seemingly untouched Contemporary. The car is 17 years old and never touched, never built. I will have a ton of questions but for now,,, how do you determine the chassis/body number?

No,,, The guy I got it from says he bought it straight from Contemporary 17 years ago and never touched it. Should he have gotten the MSO/MCO from Contempoary?

John, Congrats! I love my Contemporary! The car should have an ID plate on the top of the passenger side foot box....that's where mine is.

He should have gotten an MSO when he got it from Contemporary......
and you should have gotten the MSO when you got the kit from him......
CALL him and see if he has the MSO.....if he does not have it.....you may
have a nice paper weight........

I talked to him a couple of mins ago,,, he says he'll look through his "stuff" this weekend. I'm sure if he got one from Contemporary he still has it. He still had the original receipt for the windshield! Just in case,,,, what is planB ?

John, I don't even like to travel to California.... Fortunately we have more than a couple of guys on here who are close to being experts with the California DMV and Cobras. I did Google the checklist for registering a specially constructed vehicle in California
http://dmv.ca.gov/vr/checklists/special_con.htm and it conveniently says (at least for a trailer) that you need "the Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin or a receipt or invoice identifying the kit purchased." It would be nice if the fella can find the COO, but I wouldn't get in to a tizzy if he can't. Not having the original COO is not the kiss of death.

This page http://dmv.ca.gov/vr/spcnsreg.htm would seem to indicate that they just want proof of ownership in the Statement of Construction:
•Proof of ownership, such as invoices, receipts, manufacturers’ certificates of origin, bills of sale, or junk receipts for the major component parts (engine, frame, transmission, and body).

Congrats on the new project John!
If you can get all of your receipts together, it's possible to estimate the cost of finishing your build, pay your estimated taxes, and secure an SB100 number. It sounds like there are still about 20 SB100 sequence numbers left for 2010.

Sorry John i wasnt trying to scare the crap out of you BUT California DMV can be a pain to deal with....hopefuly he can find all the original paperwork for you and your dream will become a reality.......keep us posted on what happens and start a build thread for us...

I just took a look at the foot box. The embossed/raised area is there but it's blank. I'll see what daniel comes up with.

Build thread is a little ways out. I had to dance with the devil so to speak so my smarter half would let me buy it. I have a CJ 7 , a road grader and a bull dozer I promised to all put back together before I start a new project. Besides I'm selling the grader to supplement my $$ for the rest of the build. Anybody want a ranch grader cheap?

I don't know if this helps you, as my Contemporary is an early one. However, on my car the frame number is stamped into the top or outside surface of the drivers side main frame rail (I forget now if top or outside surface), located just aft of the front susepnsion mount points. The body number is on a decal placed centered and way up at the top of the firewall on the cockpit side of the firewall. Hope this helps.

Look for the stamped number on the 4" frame rail looking up at you with the drivers front wheel off. That will give a date it was built and maybe a number for the frame that day. As Doug said inside and centred on the firewall for the body number. Looks like most of a Jag rear in there and a lot of external hardware. That's a great project base!

Unless I'm blind and stupid (possibility) there's no numbers ANYWHERE that I can find. The kit is supposed to be a 1993 . Any other hints as to where to look?

My numbers on the frame were hidden by thick paint. I had to sand that area of the framerail to make the numbers show. As for the body, check to see if the label containing the number was painted over, of not it probably fell off.

My DMV experiences were entirely different, and I know I am not alone. Most people who post historically go over the complication of the process or bad and limiting experiences, the people who had entirely smooth ones are not posting. The whole process is a slam dunk, simple and goofy process.
I could have put "bigbird" or "youradumass" as my numbers and I am absolutely certain DMV would have taken them and CHP would have accepted them. Worst case scenario is you unofficially make what looks like an official plaque. Done. Who is going to tell you they are wrong? What is official? How does anyone know?
My manufacturer for instance used a piece of paper with a crazy set of numbers that no one could make out, used a sharpie marker to write them down, and then glassed them within the fiber glass under neath the dash. In the end, CHP used a number and said - "use that"....I then took those "magic numbers" and stamped them into the frame.
In my experience, no one cared, and for the people who asked, I could have brought a coloring book as paper work and they would have accepted it.
As the clerks at DMV say - "Next!"
