Can you tell us more on why he never started the build?

I've used all the tricks for finding numbers I can think of. I'm going to call Peter Bayer first thing on Monday. I'm also going to pull the body off for a better view.
Is there a way to spot repair powder coating? I'd be a lot more open to buffing off suspected number locations if I knew I could repair them easily.
As far as why he never built it,, I could only speculate. Like the subject says, It's a total virgin. I would have at least done something besides assemble a couple suspension parts for the photos. He did have a few other toys that were drivers and another Cobra he was doing some suspension mods to. I'm guessing that the priorities of life just set this one by the wayside.

I have a really early 1980 frame and the # is just behind the motor mount support on the drivers side.

another suggestion.......If you know he is the original owner, contact Contemporary with his name and the year it was built. If they can find it on their records, they can issue a duplicate MSO, but they will send the duplicate to the original owner, in his name, then he can give it to you.
I did the same thing with a FFR. The original owner never started construction, I purchased it with a promise that he'd find the MSO. He couldn't find it, but we both contacted FFR. They issued him a duplicate, in his name, for $20, and he sent it to me.
have fun!!

Number is stamped on the frame behind the front left suspension tower. Usually hard to see so use a flashlight. The body # may be on the inside of firewall on a sticker as that is typical. With the build do it right and use correct gas tank, roll bar, floor mounted pedals and watts linkage it will be well worth the upgrades......
Most of all = HAVE FUN!

The satin powdercoat touches up just fine with satin black duplicolor. Keep scrubbing the numbers there.

This number search is making me crazy. I'm becoming obsessed! It was easier to find my birth mother when i was 50 years old. Here is a pic of the frame.

A car that old may not have had an MSO issued. My 3140 [early 80s] did not. I do not know when the MSO concept came into being. A good question for Peter.
I didn't have any problems registering under sb100. All I had was a bill of sale. The serial number is pretty much just for fun. The DMV/CHP doesnt care about it. I got Tony's message. Have fun!

Everybody else has CCX-???? in their sig line or address. I feel like the forgotten step child. I WANT A NUMBER TOO!!
It goes like this,
" I have a Contemporary!
Oh great!
What's the car number? UHHH, I don't know. I can't find it. I have the only car ever produced by them without a number."

When the car was for sale in Sept, I called the owner and I was told this body and frame were from different cars as the body that went with the frame you have was in primer with poor body work and another base kit was bought long ago and the bodies were switched so the unused frame matched the unused body. The owner said he had the MSO at the time, he was nice guy, answered all my questions. Congrats on the purchase as I really wanted it and when it was on Ebay I bid up to $10k.

John, I'm kinda liking "The Phantom Contemporary"......Has a cool ring to it!!! I think you should just run with that! (FWIW I do understand your frustration...) Mark

When I picked it up I got a slightly different story. He said he bought the body from Lynn Parks and was going to build a custom frame. When that didn't work out, he bought a new frame for it through Lynn again. He then ran across another unfinished car and wanted to build it with coil over front instead of the torsion bar. The he was going to put the second body with the new frame and sell that, but the second body was so rough that he didn't feel comfortable selling it with a new frame. I saw the second body and
the coil over frame he's working on. He is right the second body was very rough and would have devalued the car by thousands. So as I get it , the new body that I have was bought new from Contemporary by him. At a later date , he bought the new frame from Contemporary. I would think that at least the frame would have had some permanent numbers stamped into it.
Your right about him being a nice guy.

You have stripped the powdercoat in the right place. I hope you didn't take any numbers with it?! I don't know of any other number locations for them, anyone else??
I just went down in my slippers while the Pats are playing to get the numbers and it looks to be of little use.

No , I used a soft pad used for buffing down aluminum and delicate surfaces. What I'm starting to see is that there are different numbers depending on the year it was built. Seems that there are dates and ccx numbers.
I appreciate all the input I've gotten but so far I guess it still remains the Phantom Contemporary.
