Default RARE Contemporary Classic Daytona Coupe on eBay (Ontario)

I'm not the seller of this car, nor do I know him/her.

Nonetheless I thought others might be interested in this ultra-rare Cobra Daytona Coupe replica from the renowned Contemporary Classic Motor Car Company (now defunct) -- one of only 8 they ever produced -- that is for sale right now on eBay.

This particular car is chassis no. CCX-4-2607 and is located in St. Catharines ON.

I prefer the cobra and GT40 over the coupe, but this one looks nice. Most of the replicated coupe's don't look quite correct when compared to the originals. How close did Contemporary make theirs ? Something still looks off ?

Looking at the side view, the ride height in the rear appears to be jacked way up. Lowering it would make a huge difference. I don't think Contemporary made the same unfortunate modifications to the coupe that they did to their 427 body, but someone more knowledgeable might chime in.

Contemporary splashed the body off an original that was down for restoration, don't remember where or when, but the end result was a big lawsuit that put Contemporary out of busness, this was in the 1980's I think, you can't get anymore "original" looking than that. The story should be available somewhere

I think that as well, but it could,.....be the uneven pavement ?
(I hate cars that are all jacked up in the rear)

Or, I wonder if it's a solid rear axle, making it higher than a IRS would be ? (should look to see what it has)

#13 - CSX2299 - is part of the Larry H Miller collection and a frequent visitor to the Shelby American Collection in/near Boulder. I'd be willing to bet the driver in the picture is Bill Murray probably at Steamboat. I get a queasy feeling whenever I see it in person. Pictures simply don't do it justice. Here's my favorite:

As I recall Montti told me about making the mold. Peter worked something out and they had one week, no questioned asked. Montti was a true car guy who wanted to go fast. The coupe was better to go real fast.

There are only two deviations that I can readily see. One is in the trailing edge of the door. On the original it goes all the way to and includes the lip of the rear wheel opening, while on the Contemporary it follows the shape of the opening, leaving a visible space between the two.

The other is in the contour of the lower forward end of the wheel opening. The original curves forward into the rocker and under the sidepipe scallop, while the Contemporary continues to follow the radius all the way down to an abrupt, sharp transition into the rocker.

Whether this reflects a simple modification to the door for production and/or practicality concerns, one of the many variations that exist among the originals themselves; or an actual change to the Contemporary body shape - as was done to their 427 model - I really don't know. Peter Bayer did seem to have a thing for increasing rocker height and altering wheel openings to suit his own sense of aesthetics.

I believe Bill Connelly Upstate Motorcars finished up with the mold and a couple of bodies out of it. He offered them to me for a pretty good price a couple of years back. It could just be the angle difference but the crown of the rear hatch and opening seems like a hard thing to get looking correct. I think getting front and rear ride height and sidewalls correct makes a huge difference to the overall look, if you can get the right stance you got it almost nailed.

I agree, stance is everything. I remember my brother as a teen had a 73' Dodge Charger and he made longer,...much longer, shackles to raise the rear into the Stratosphere, and I hated it !

My Camaro was nice and,.... level.

Even if you lowered the ride height in the back, I think it would still look off a bit. It would seem to me that the rear has its own version of a "perky butt". The rear window is almost horizontal and looks to be totally unusable for rear vision. Has someone got pictures of an original coupe from the back? Then compare it to the E-bay listing picture. I think you will see the rear window was somewhat more usable on the original, so the back end must have curved down more. It could be my eye, but I think others might agree. Also the door "thing" that was mentioned makes it different. So, if it was "splashed" off an original, why is this different. That being said, I would still like to own it and have to defend the different look!

I bought my Contemporary from Bill Connelly and while at his place picking it up I went round and round his Upstate Super Replicars coupe, definately a coilover chassis and a beautiful car. they have a ton of pictures of it on the Lesher site.

Here is as close a comparison of shots as I could find.....

Hard to see from the 2 different camera angles, but as I recall the Contemporary was pretty damn close, that one on Ebay is definately jacked up in the back as compared to the one I looked at.
