Default Rebuilding jag steering rack

I have a jag series 1 steering rack on my Contemporary Classic. One of the balls broke off the tie rod, so I need to rebuild the rack. Does anyone know of a good reference manual that details how to rebuild the rack?

The rack is off the car, so I thought I would rebuild it before reinstalling.

Default look carefully

On the CC the balls are cut from the standard rack and moved out using a sleeve. The originals won't be a drop in.

Manual Rack Rebuild
Fred has a good point, it's mainly the sleeve bearings on the end. Secure it and give them a wriggle to see if they're loose. It can be a pain to replace them. The small pinion bearing wasn't the right size from the Jag dealer and I sourced those elsewhere.

Thanks for the rebuilding manual rack info, just what I was looking for. I am replacing the tie rods with the threaded rods I ordered from you.

I do this which funnily enough looks a lot like the original tie rod extender.

Here are some things to watch out for. where the spherical diameter meets the radius releif, beware of chips or other imperfections that could cause fatigue failures. I had one fail on my a couple of years ago. Nick (Mickmate) made some upgraded tie rods that are great.

These photos are of the one that hadn't failed yet. An analysis on the one that did fail indicated severe fatigue caused by repeated impacts. Teh left front wheel had a hell of a shake in it until I tightened up the steering. Notice the small chip just under the radius in the transition area. It would have failed within a few hundred miles.

Thanks for the feedback, I think I will have my failed parts analyzed (and the other side that did not fail). I purchased 2 new tie rods from Nick (Mickmate) they looked great.

Look close in the radius on the part that hasn't failed yet.
