New Trans
I'm thinking about swapping out my 4 speed toploader for a Five speed. I've had a lot of recommendations to go with a TKO 600. Any thoughts out there?
I was also wondering if there is any interest on the toploader, or should I put it on Ebay? It's mechanically great, but I'd like that fifth gear for long highway drives. |
Having an overdrive is awesome. The torque capacity of the TKO 600 will give you a little peace of mind as well.
What are you currently using for a bellhousing? If you're using a stock or Lakewood bellhousing, you'll either need to order the trans with a short input shaft, or you can use a spacer. A spacer is not a good way to go in my eyes, but others use them. You can also upgrade to a Quicktime bellhousing. They only weigh 20 lbs and they don't require a spacer or a short input. You will also need a new clutch disc with 26 splines. On October 1st, I understand that Tremec will be raising their prices, and the TKO 600's will go up about $200. I'm running a special on TKO's and Quicktime bellhousings right now. Tremec dictates a minimum advertised price, but if you need a price, then shoot me a PM or email and I'll treat you right. I give good discounts for Club Cobra members. If your Toploader is a big in/big out, then you should be able to sell it very easily and recoup some of the TKO cost. |
You'll find a lot of threads on CC regarding the TKO 600. The .082 fifth gear is great for freeway cruising. I went with the Quicktime (looks good, decent price, seems to be a popular choice). I also have the Steeda shift kit. It's nice to have, but I found that it still took me some time to get used to the shift from second to third.
Sounds like Brent can make you a good deal on the combo. |

I would consult David Key, he might have best thoughts about transition. 5th would be nice on the freeway! Dave B's is nice and tach down on the open road while I am at 3200rpm..... Might have a good ROI with gas where it is????? Best of luck! |
TKO transmission in a Contemporary
I bought my TKO 600 from Fortes (http://www.fortesparts.com/index.cfm). He modifies it with a Toploader input shaft so that you don't need a spacer or long bellhousing. I have an early frame with a 3.5" crossmember tube. The pad in front needs to be cut down and the holes relocated. I would have an interference with the tube if I used the stock TKO. You may also need to shorten your driveshaft with the stock TKO, I can give you measurements if you like. The transmission gear also gets changed to the T10 style. Otherwise the swap is pretty straight forward,

I've changed from a toploader to a Tremec TKO 600. Once you get used to the different exhaust sound at 70 MPH, it's really nice. The best part is getting 16.5 MPH from your 427 on highway trips.. It shifts smoothly, but requires some modification to the fork to get it to clear the frame. It is worth the investment if you intend to put distance runs on the car. For just short trips or shows, not much gain.
