Default Toploader Rev. Lockout Gate

I have an ERA with a 4 spd. top loader. WR. I love this transmission. The only complaint I have is that Rev. is located to the left of 1st. At times, I have accidentally shifted into rev. instead of 1st. I tend to always start out slow, so no damage ever done as of yet. My question is, can the lockout gate be hooked up or is it hard to do? The spring is there along with the "T" on the bent handle.

It all depends on which shift mechanism you are using. If it is stock (I doubt it), there is no reason that it can't be hooked up. Odds are though, that you have a Hurst mechinism...most are, and I believe that David Kee uses them almost exclusively because they are much better than the original style. The only drawback is that there is no provision for a reverse lockout.

That said, I have a Hurst on mine, and have never buzzed reverse. First can be difficult to get quickly, unless I go to second first on my way down. Then it's a quick flick foreward into first. That may be why I've never buzzed reverse.

You can change th linkage so that reverse is next to second by flipping the linkage on the trans. This will work on most but not all hurst setups. If the shifter is setup right you shouldn't pull into reverse when shifting from 1st to 2nd.
