Dates- Friday, July 11-Sunday July 13, 2014
Location- Hiawassee, GA. For those unacquainted with Hiawassee, it is a small town located on beautiful Lake Chatuge in North GA, about 2 miles from the NC border.
Accommodations- We have reserved a block of rooms at the Lake Chatuge Lodge in Hiawassee. We have a group rate of $84 for a standard room and $96 for lakeside. To avoid confusion, we are letting everyone book their own rooms by logging onto
Lake Chatuge Lodge, Georgia Mountain Hotel, Hiawassee Hotel and entering promo code COBRA. They will hold the rooms until July 5th, after that you will need to book on your own if there is still availability. Rooms can be cancelled up to 24 hours before check-in, should the weather not cooperate.
For those arriving on Friday, we will be doing a short afternoon cruise to Blood Mountain and Wolf Pen Gap, a fun drive full of twisty roads and relatively free of traffic. We will return to Hiawassee around 5:30, and then will take a beautiful drive around the lake to Hayesville, NC, for dinner at the wonderful Copper Door restaurant at 7pm.
Saturday morning will see us departing for the stunning Cherohala Skyway, a 42 mile byway linking Robbinsville, NC to Tellico Plains, TN. This incredible stretch of road climbs to over 5000 feet elevation as it winds through forests of hardwoods and evergreens, providing beautiful vistas, great twisty roads and usually cool temps. After lunch in Tellico Plains, we will make our way back to Hiawassee down scenic back roads and byways. Dinner on Saturday will be at the Chophouse, which is right on premises of the Lodge, and for those folks interested, after dinner we will do a sunset pontoon boat cruise on Lake Chatuge.
Sunday morning we are off on another quest to find the best twisty roads in the area, this time we are headed through the gorgeous Cullasaja Gorge to Highlands, NC. This scenic road is home to numerous waterfalls, (one that you can actually drive behind!) and endless twists and turns along the route. After a quick tour of the quaint town of Highlands, we head south on the famous Moonshiner 28, a byway steeped in southern history. As we meander toward Clayton, Ga, we will stop to sample the wares at the Tiger Mountain Winery before heading back to Hiwassee.
We hope to see as many folks as can make it for a fun weekend of cars, mountains, and great roads!
Best,
