Deep South Cobra Club need your input
It’s time to start thinking about our 3rd annual meeting. At our first gathering in Tallahassee we had 10 Cobras and 28 people, our second gathering in McDonough jumped the totals to about 60 plus Cobras and about 100 people. Both weekends it RAINED. The Gear Heads still had a good time talking cars and Cobras, but the families get bored really quickly. I thought it would be nice if we could hold our event at one of the many theme parks in Florida making it a truly family event. Our club now stands at over 300 membership in the 8 states that we represent. Just so you will get an idea as to what I’m proposing, I contacted Cypress Gardens to get some ideas. First off we would need one million dollars of event insurance for the weekend that we pick. We also would have to commit to one banquet, which could be breakfast, lunch, or dinner. The charge would be like the senior rate of around $27.50 per adult but would get us into the park all day Saturday and Sunday. The regular admission is $34.95+ tax per adult. There is a Best Western right across the street from Cypress Gardens. I would have to talk with the motels to try and get us a deal for this event. There are still a lot of questions that I need to ask from Cypress Gardens and as soon as I hear from our membership I plan on going up to Cypress to meet with them in person. If I can’t get a commitment for our annual event I think I will still try for an event for the Florida and Georgia group, everyone will be invited. Do me a favor put in your address then Cypress Gardens 2641 S. Lake Summit Dr. Winter Haven, Fl. 33884, and tell me how far it is. I need two things right now a date and would you attend such an event Thanks in advance, Dan

485 miles from my house and 9 hours according to Mapquest. would prefer Jacksonville/Savannah, but I definitely think the idea of making it family friendly is a very good one.

Can't post but lurk here all the time:
Savannah would be good. We could rent Robelng Road. Dowwntown Savannah is beautiful, with Beauford and Hilton Head near by. Outlet mall there as well in Savannah. Could meet out by the track. Chip n Atlanta
This is an email I got from Charles Bering whom I met in Fort Myers and at our second annual meeting in McDonough. See you can post. Thanks for your input

From my house to McDonough, Ga. by MapQuest 545 miles 9 hours, 17 minutes. I normally make it to Atlanta not towing a car in 9 hours but that includes my 45 minute stop for breakfast and all the other pit stops. My trip to McDonough in April took 10 hours towing my car with even more pit stops. I took 2 days up and 2 back to take in DVSFII in June. I didn't think it would be fare to post from my house to Cypress Gardens. Cypress is just south of Old Town and I thought we might make the Saturday night Cruise thay have every Saturday.

Dan,
From Niceville to Winter Haven = 489.5 miles and 8 hr 20 min; to Savannah = 463.5 and 8 hr 10 min. In southern Ga there is also the Okefenokee Swamp Recreation area, Waycross GA. Never been there, but I heard its nice.

Cypress Gardens Question
Hey guys!
Have you talked with the ladies in your lives? While we enjoy all the neat cars, it would sure would be great to have something to do besides listen to you guys comparing nuts and bolts.

Dan,
I think Jean is right, lets hear from the ladies. It makes no difference to Carol and me where we meet as long as there are things for everyone to do. Alot of places to go in this part of the US. Once you load up the car, I don't think 6, 8, or 9 hours makes a whole lot of difference; it's a day drive.

How about Savannah? Could rent Roebling Road-was done 7/3/02. Historic Svannah is pretty, Hilton Head and Beauford close by, outlet mall right off I-95 in Savannah. Callaway Gardens good too. Wold like some dyno/track time. How about Senoia Speecway, or autocross set up with instructors.

Now you're talkin' Alex....
Mapquest says 389+ miles and 8:27 from Memphis to Pine Mountain, GA, and Callaway Gardens. That's much more like it.
Of course, now the Florida-based boys have a little further to go. Dan, you'll have 561 miles and 8:38 hours to drive, as opposed to my 13 hours to get to Cypress Gardens!
But, listen to this....again, according to Mapquest....it said I had 843.1 miles and 12:58 hours to Cypress Gardens...meaning I had to average about 65 MPH to make it in that time frame. BUT...at 389 miles and 8:27 hours to Callaway Gardens, I gotta average only 45 MPH! What's up with THAT?
BTW, Dan, from Cape Coral to Callaway Gardens, you'll have to average about 65 MPH to make it in 8:38 hours - barring any trips to the Emergency Room to reset broken elbows!
I kinda like the Savannah suggestion, boys....

My 2 cents.....
Although I like the idea of a central Florida DSCC meeting (for selfish
reasons), I have to agree that many of our DSCCers will be shut out or
simply refuse to make the trip due to excessive drive times. The goal
should be to make this available to the masses.
Let's try to select a location that is more centrally located to the entire
DSCC membership.
I would suggest Savannah, Jacksonville, Valdosta, or Macon.

The little town next to Callaway has a few nice restuarants. Nice place to cruise going up to the Little White House etc. Sorry but I don't want to spend a whole day towing my car. Even Savanah is a little far but its doable

Alex, don't know how long you've had your SPF, but a day's drive/tow is pretty much the norm. I'm looking at a day's drive/tow to either Callaway Gardens, or Savannah, either way. True, one's closer than the other, but as long as I can make it in a day, I'm down with it.
I'll go two days drive/tow for the right event, but it has to be a multi-day, track oriented event with a good chance to get laid....

Savannah is beautiful. My wife and I really enjoy visiting there from time to time. The historic homes tours are excellent and interesting. The restaurants are great. The live oaks are awesome. The "riverboat" ride isn't worth the moey, but everything else is great. I would certainly be partial to Savannah as a meeting place. Mark one more vote for Savannah. I've never been to Roebling
It seems like it took me about 6 hours or so to get there from Camden the last time I visited. Maybe longer. I can't remember.
April may not be good. Is May too hot? Just offering up the idea.

Flyin_Freddie, and all others that have replied so far
Portland Oregon is out. Why do most of you not want to travel more than 15 minutes from your home, and think the guy putting on the show wants to travel all day to get there? This question is not really for Freddie because I know he will travel to have fun. Actually I think the closest point to all 8 states is around Birmingham, Alabama. Now you have created another problem for me, I can run the show if we go with say something like Cypress Gardens. If we are headed back up north I will need someone to handle the show for the club, as it will be to far for me to take on this task. There is no way we will ever make ever one happy. I guess I will have to have a show for the Florida guys at Cypress Gardens and anyone else who would like to attend. This still leaves a need for a date and a place for our 3rd. annual event. I'll be waiting to hear from all the volunteers.
Dan
