Have the salvage Explorer engine bac in the coupe.

The culprit seems to have been the gear on the Acel distributor: Was ground sharp b the old roller cam and the debris got into the old engine thus causingthe knock.

HAve found a steel gear for the distributor for the replacement engine. Hope to fire it up Friday. Will let everyone know. I appreicate the help.

Next question: Do you think part of the distributor gear failure could have been improper spacing? Remember reading something on this forum on this. Did you have to space your distrubutor when you put it on your Explorer motor?

UPDATE: Coupe is alive and drove from the shop right to a car show tonight and then home. Found a Crane steel disributor gear for the old Accel dual point distributor: we needed a .5 diametre hole for the shat (an unusual size): otherwise we were going to have to go with a whole MSD ignition et up to the tune of $500! Did everything for about $1600 including salvage Explorer engine,
labor, gasket set, oil for 2 oil changes, plugs etc.

And it runs like wild! MUCH FASTER!

wwe are going to tear down the old engine and see what's wrong: we believe it was the cast distribtor gear eaten up by the hardened roller cam gear: A roller cam calls for a bronze or hardened steel distributor gear. The gear we took out was really chewed up.

We may rebuild the old engine as a spare and sell off the fuel injection etc to off set the cost of the rebuild.

Thanks for all the help-see you at the Willis! cb
