A friend of mine lives in the Atlanta area and ran his 911 with NASA this past weekend at Road Atlanta. He said he had a good time spanking some Cobras. I'm having a bit of trouble with that. He is coming out my way in 2 weeks and I can't have him thumbing his nose at me now, can I? Who can tell me the real story? Got any photos? He sent me a shot in the esses, with a couple of cobras, but I don't know how to attach it here.

Well let me start by saying that Cobras are usually about the fastest thing on the straights except for a full race car and there are race cars that have trouble keeping up on the straights. That being said most road courses have the dreded enemy of the Cobra, the curve. A cobra can be a real handful on high speed curves and that is where a well sorted out car like a 911 can make up a lack of power.
I ran last year on the Roebling Road course against several Porsche's including a 944 and a 911. I kept the 944 behind me only because he could only pass on the straight due to our class rules. I could smoke him down the over 5000 foot straight only to have him nipping at my heals half way down the curvy back stretch. The 911 was formidable but it too could not keep up due to lack of acceleration. It litterly smoked my cobra on my Kumho 712 street rubber.
This year I plan on a different outcome with my new Goodyear stock car tires and wheels. Racing makes you spend money and I have added the tires and wheels, Canton Road race pan, Hawk brake pads, Kirkey race seat, and Lexan race windshield.
I cannot stress enough that tires will improve your times more than an extra 100 hp. You should start with street rubber to keep the speeds down and to learn the quirks of your car.

OK...I figured it out and here is the shot of last weekend. Any of you Atlanta guys know these cars? The 911 is a full tilt race car and he goes fast! The cobras appear to be Factory Five spec racers.
As for those Kuhmo 712's...throw them in the trash!! That's what I did and switched to Toyo RA-1. What a HUGE difference.

The #77 FFR Spec Racer won it's class handily.
If that Porche is the one that I think it is it's very fast! I think it's the one that that won the big bore event; or at least came in very high. It was very fast through the turns of course and didn't give up too much, if anything, on the straights; even the extra long back straight.
The FFR Spec Racers with a basically stock 5.0 go pretty fast but don't compare to some of the more pure race and highly modified Porche, BMWs, and Mustangs, etc.
Get out to a NASA race if ou get a chance. Good racing and you can roam through the paddoc and talk to the competitors. They also have what they call High Performance Driving Events where you run your car (virtually ANY car meeting basic safety regs) and have an onboard instructor(and classroom training) to assist .
I plan to run in the HPDEs when I finish my FFR roadster (non-Spec Racer)

Thanks for the info. The 911 has a 3.0 engine recently dyno'd with 230 HP to the wheels. His car conforms to Porche club rules and he did take 2nd in class.
I have been a NASA member for 3 years and run in HPDE 4 in AZ. We are blessed because there is a lot of sunshine with extended opportunities for track time. There are two other clubs here, ProAutoSports ( www.proautosports.com) and Arizona Sports Racing Assoc. ( www.azsportsracing.org) that run similar events on the four local tracks in the Phoenix area. Within 300 miles, there are 4 more tracks; 2 in Las Vegas and 2 in NM.
I highly recommend learning to drive your car on the track. It is great fun and will teach you how to become a better driver. A couple of months ago, I set up a track day at Firebird Raceway for the Cobra Club. Many were first timers to the track, but everyone had a real blast! Mine is the red one.
