Default Saturday in Daytona Beach

DAYTONA BEACH -- Have an affinity for autos and a craving for chowder? A car show on Saturday will try to satisfy both appetites.

"It's the perfect match, hot soup and cool cars," said Doug Giacobbe, a professor of social sciences at Daytona Beach Community College.

The Soup'R Bowl will be serving soup while car clubs will exhibit autos in the parking lot of the Advanced Technology Center.

As part of the third annual Auto Extravaganza, the public can vote on the vintage and novelty cars for a "people's choice awards," Giacobbe said.

Winning cars will make a victory lap through the school parking lot, he said.

Besides vintage Model A's, Volkswagens and Mustangs, there will be new novelty cars, such as elevated cars with hydraulic suspension systems. Most of the participating car clubs are local, but some clubs are coming from as far away as Brandon, Giacobbe said.

Bobby Likis will be broadcasting his radio show, Car Clinic, from the school.

Organizers hope the event will increase exposure for the ATC, which opened in 2001.

The school provides technology-based education for high school and community college students. Students will be giving school tours Saturday. The car show is fitting since the school has an automotive technology program. During the event, Saturn of Daytona will donate a "cutaway" car, used to show interior details, from its showroom for the school to use in its training program.

The Pilot Club is sponsoring the Soup'R Bowl as a fund-raiser for brain-related disorders, said Yvonne Newcomb, event chairman. Twenty-three restaurants are donating all kinds of soup, including broth, chowder, ethnic soups, chili and stew.

While the car show is free, the public is asked to make a $10 donation before sampling their favorite soups

Earl - Was that Saturday 1/29, or in the future?
