Tom,

Thanks for your reply. I agree, hopefully Ed and crew will see this post and let us know -- usually when I'm involved in a fund raiser, part of the thrill, for me, is knowing how successful we were -- I usually put my "all" into a project -- and knowing if we hit our objective is part of my stimules.

Tom, again thanks -- by the way, I'm ready to get things going for nexts years Fling.

Mike

FYI AJ= Race car driver, JA= me kinda like GE is me

Just kidding. It was a better turn out than last year considering the shorten time frame that they had to put it back together. That's what I was trying to say/type. Truly amazing. I did not get to attend the first two events but I got the feeling it was a little like those two. Just guessing.

Tom: I can totally understand the family picture senario argh!
BTW did you ever get the throttle cable glassed in? The next time you talk to Fred tell him to email me his address. I still owe him a beer for all his effortson the clutch cable.... but I send up Kentucky's finest as a good substitue and a throw one for the rest of the gang too.

Default Update from DV

I spoke with Ed, DV, this a.m.

Tracked him down in the woods of N. Michigan....
...no computer set up yet and a lousy dial-up being fixed by the phone company.

Here is the snapshot..

"....very happy that the event went off as well as it did, considering the short time we had when it was finally decided to run with it.

... Kit Car Magazine counted 307 cars attended the event.

...there will be pics available of the raffle winner accepting the keys.

...the Sunday event seemed to be a winner.

...plans for DVSF V are underway, with the state park having a bigger role on the Sunday.

...net, net donation to CF was approx 12K, after all expenses"

Ed relayed thanks to all who came and promised to answer these posts when he gets his system online.

I have e-mailed the fellow who took the pics of the winner... I'll post when I get them.

Last year was exceptional and it was the Kirkham donation car that really sent it over the top. I'm just glad to see after expenses there WAS something to donate. Ed has mentioned several times the expenses involved are enormous.

THANKS FOR THE INFORMATION --- I LOOK FORWARD TO ED'S "STATE OF THE UNION" ADDRESS. DID YOU MAKE A TYPO, WAS THAT $12,000.00 OR $120,000.00?

I'M THINKING HE (ED) PROBABLY WANTS TO GET THE BOOKS CLOSED ON THIS YEARS FLING SO HE CAN OPEN THEM AGAIN FOR NEXT YEAR.

How much did Ed sell his car to the CF foundation for ? I would think the cost of his car (sale price to the CF Foundation) came out of the pofits(donations) generated at the Spring Fling.

I personnaly do not care what the final amount is, as long as all the bills were paid and there was money left over. If the final tote was just $5.00 that's $5.00 more than they had before. As the awareness of this event grows so will the donations.

Ginny and I will be there next year with quilts in hand,

Mike

The track events are going to be held at the "Gainesville Raceway Road Course" on Thursday and Friday. The track is about 10 miles East of I-75 in Gainesville Fl.
Friday afternoon we move down I-75 to Ocala and setup for Saturday's Car Show, Poker Run, Raffle, etc. all at "Big Daddy" Don Garlis Museum of Drag Racing. Big bar-b-que and keg party planned for Friday night. Saturday night dinner party to follow the days events.

I'm still working on some committments for the events, but I can assure you all that attend will be pleased! (Hints: "Eye Candy" and a new "Cobra Roller" for the raffle)

computer works. i know you are only the messenger, BUT:

i am struggling here to figure out this fuzzy math...300 cars +/- at $100 per car = $300,000 gross..ADD IN the auction, purchases of memorbilia/shirts/etc... and the NET PROFIT after expenses for CF/Team Jenny is ONLY $12,000 ?

help me please, tell me my math is wrong or the net donation is wrong. .... as this math does not add up !

300 folks could have stayed at home and sent a $40 check each and generated $12k. bill.

EDITED COMMENTS BY BILL FOLLOWS ; SORRY FOLKS, AS WAS CORRECTLY POINTED OUT BY COMPUTERWORKS, MY MATH WAS FUZZY AND HAD A FATAL ERROR, THE GATE FEE WOULD HAVE BEEN $30,000 AND NOT THE 300K I REFERENCED ABOVE. DUH. MY SINCERE APOLOGY HERE FOR BAD LOGIC AND BAD MATH. BILL.

Yes, I am the messenger.

Yes, your math is wrong

$100 x 300 = 30,000, not 300,000

Only 30K? I'm surprised there was any money left over for CF.

Been discussed offline...

Bear in mind that at DVSF III, there was a completely free car donated by Kirkham (with the help of others). Seems like the auction was significantly larger. We had lots of free stuff this year, great meals, etc... all part of the $30K.

I know none of us know what Ed sold the DV car to CF for, but keep in mind whatever that number was cut hard into a raffle that I don't think got as much interest this year as last year, for whatever reason.

In any event, we can be glad we raised the $12K. If you're not satisfied with that (I'm personally a little disappointed), I think if there is a DVSF V, we need to have more involvement from the masses. (read: More involvement from the masses needs to be allowed).

I may take some heat for posting this, but if you're reading, bear in mind the context and meaning here. That being that I think Ed Combs effectively reached his own personal limit as to what he can do to make the event what it is. Imagine that, he is a human.

But I think while I may be the one who thinks out loud, I'm not the only one who felt like if you weren't part of a very select few, you weren't in a position to help out for DVSF IV. I know that it is easy to get entrenched in something like this and want to "go it alone" (or with the help of your family, etc...)

Whether or not there is a "DVSF V", whether or not it is in London, whether or not it is the third weekend in June.......we need to have everyone feel welcome to be involved in the planning, donating, giving, etc... phases.

Just remember how quickly a few people had the Cleveland Fling in order. Had the "ok" been given, how quickly the Kansas City Fling would have been in order.

Cobra owners are mighty resourceful people. Leave them to their devices, stuff gets done. Would I love to be back in London in June '05? You bet. But I would prefer to see an event that is run for the people, by the people, pooling the massive resources of all, wherever it may end up...and whenever.

This year, Ed's greatest fears came true. The Fling became bigger than the people. That wasn't so the first 3 years.

JP

PS - My above post reads kind of negatively because I'm addressing the concerns that seem to be shared by many: "Why did we only raise X? Last year we raised Y. We had more cars this year. What gives?" I still had a really great time, and I know everyone else did, too. It was a great event, and my hat is off (as it was right after) to Ed and crew for putting it together. To Rick Dorman for organizing the Poker Run. To the great people I've only met on here and finally got to share a beer with in person. Just trying to do my best, above, to answer the questions I know a lot of us are asking....
