Looks like you're doing pretty good with the bodywork. I remember those days well!!! That first coat of primer is a good feeling!

Keith Craft broke my engine in on the dyno this week and I went down this morning to check it out. Nice torquey restoration engine for the street - 9:1 compression and a hydraulic cam with over 470 HP and over 530 ft lbs torque. Only hitch was my dual point distributor kept wiping out the points rubbing blocks. They finally had to install an MSD temporarily to break it in. A pleasure doing business with Tony, Keith and Shelly. Great guys to deal with. I also checked out his Kirkham he still has for sale - very nice car.

The bottom photo is actually a video link that shows a dyno pull they made while I was there.

Old spot is now . . . . well I guess old speckled now. For a brief moment it was back to one color again. At last I got a warm enough day to spray some high build polyester primer outside - unfortunately I had to contend with wind.










Now, after this brief pause - back to sanding again.

I picked today when the wind was out of the southwest and would blow overspray towards the lake behind us. I did cover up the driveway and one wall with visqueen to be safe - but that pesky wind was higher than I had expected and made it unnecessary.

On another note a neighbor got curious as to what I was up to and came over to tell me he is in the pre-finished auto accessories business and has a $70K paint booth and some allegedly great painters that would love to get a chance to paint a Cobra replica like this. He might rent me the booth if I am set on painting it myself (which I had planned). He seemed to know his painting business so I guess I'll check out what he has to offer.

Motor sounds great and car looks like it's coming along very nicely. Maybe you can attend the Texas Club Cobra event in San Marco's next year. If you decide to come this year without your car of course, look me up as I will have my new Exact Carbon Fiber Cobra there with Keith Craft 496 FE in it.

Finally about to have paint. Started with Red but ended up going basic Black.





I forgot to take a picture in our homebuilt spray booth until I was quiting for the day and no lights were on. Should finish masking Tues and start painting Wed.

I had a little trouble the first day with a regulator and new gun on the sealer. I think I have mostly recovered from it today. I'll shoot the body on Sat.

So is that your @ home spray booth? Looks very inventive...can you tell us more about it from a construction/ventilation standpoint? Can't wait for more updates and good luck with the body!

Thanks, I got the idea for it from an Auto Restorer magazine story. It's built out of 1-1/4 in PVC pipe and visqueen - 13' x 20' x 7'-6" - very roomy. We put heavy construction paper down on the floor and taped the visqueen to the paper to form a tight enclosure. Across the back is a row of air conditioning filters at the ceiling line. In the front I took an old air/heater blower unit and motor that I was given, and mounted in a plywood box with the motor outside the box. The motor blows out and pulls air in through the row of filters. We stuck some powder coating cabinet filters in front of the blower and all overspray is getting trapped in them. For lighting we installed six - double tube lights in the booth and a couple outside halagon lights on the floor. Lighting is good but I could stand more down low. I purchased some visqueen zippers to provide access in and out which works well.

The booth is a success - I can't entirely say the same for the PPG sealer - it's giving me some fits. Fortunately, the PPG concept black paint is spraying fine so far.

The hardest part of the painting is now done - the main body. I still have the top of the hood and trunk to shoot. Man - crawiling around the floor with a paint gun and dragging two air hose behind is tough for a 60-year old.

Thanks Tim. And boy is it black. After the first coat went on and covered the gray it was like working in a dark tunnel after that when spraying the sides and rockers. I thought I had plenty of light but I probably needed a couple of tube fixtures mounted about a foot off the floor and that might not have helped much. I had to get an LED light and go around the bottom side a couple of times to make sure I was getting full coverage.

Black seems to have become the new Red (or blue/white). For the first time that I can recall, we've got three black cars in the shop, none with stripes.

Oh no - I'm becoming lost in a crowd. It may in part have to do with the cost of red paints. I started out red but gravitated back to black. My wife actually seemed a bit relieved. I think she thought the red a bit flashy.

What is the real name of the color? Beige sounds kind of pedestrian. Reminds me of the old 64/65 Plymouth Belvedere sedans that use to run around in the 60s with 426street wedges and 4 speeds. I'm sure its really a metallic, clear coated snazzy named tint.
