Default Jag Rear Brake Problem

I'm just now getting to the point of bleeding the rear brakes on #778 and ran into what might be a serious problem. One of the brake bleeders is leaking - right out the center hole, no matter how hard I try to snug it down.

If I switch the bleeder to the other caliper, the problem moves with it.

The rear end is a 1985 XJ-6 that ERA supplied, already rebuilt. What can the problem be? Is there supposed to be an o-ring or anything in the hole to create the seal or is it just the metal to metal contact? I have a Ja g manual for an earlier model that shows a steel ball with the bleeder. Should I have one?

No O-ring etc. Take that to the parts store and match it to a new one. Or buy a pair of Russell Speed Bleeders which are great. I think they are 3/8 x 24 but may be wrong-easy enough to match up.

They are a taper seal, metal on metal. As suggested simply get a new nipple

If you want, I can send you a couple new bleeders. Doug also mentioned that sometimes the leak is actually at the bridge line just behind the bleeder, so check that the fitting there is nice and tight.

Default It's not the Bridge Fitting

Bob,

At first I thought it was that fitting behind the bleeder as well so I removed the driver's side tire to get at it, but finally I could see that it was coming from the bleeder.

Thanks for the offer on a new pair of bleeders. I might have to take you up on that. Let me check my local parts guys first. I'll PM you if I need you and Doug to send me anything.

Since you're going in there anyway get the Speed Bleeders. Open bleeder once, pull vacuum and bleed and close when clean, bubble-less fluid comes out. Close and you're done.
Much easier.

Thanks, Chas.

I'm ordering some from Summit Racing tonight.

I'll let everyone know how it all comes out. Can't work on it until Saturday. I've got a retirement party tomorrow night and two more days to work - then I'll be able to work on #778 EVERY DAY!

Can't wait!

Well, I didn't get to try the new bleeders until Sunday afternoon, but when I did, voila - problem solved!
I ordered the Russell's Speed Bleeders from Summit, but found that they were exactly the same as some "Help" parts at Advance Auto. Anyway, these worked great! Leak gone - and at a lot lower torque than even the "good" original part.

These new bleeders are also SHORTER which makes access less of a problem.

Thanks for the help, guys!
