Default ERA 2139 My thoughts after 4000 miles

TKB has inspired me to write a similar synopsis after 4000 miles of use of my ERA. First off the building process was the most enjoyable part for me. Driving is also quite enjoyable, but I only drive on two lane back roads. I personally feel overexposed in traffic and do not like the attention, but that is just me.
The build was very straight forward as these cars are actually very simple machines. In retrospect, I would have elected to bond the body myself, once you see the kit in your possession it is easy to see how straight forward the process would be. I did find the ERA body to require quite of bit of body work, especially with the cockpit coamings, wheel openings, underside of hood and trunk, and a lot of pin holes that seem to pop out in the jell coat later. I also wish the panel gaps could be tighter. This is the only fiberglass car that I have ever built, so I do not have much to compare to.
Mechanically the car could not be any better, solid, rattle free. Steering is precise although heavy but not overly so. Brakes do take a heavy pedal pressure. I selected a weber equipped 331 small block that I built myself. It has a very mild cam and is very streetable. Lugs around a parking lot in first gear at 800 rpm with no bucking. The webers were quite a challenge to tune. But once set, they are set. The best part about them is the ease of cold engine driveability. Cold engine starts right up like an injected motor. However, they do suffer from fuel boil-over after a hot day shut down.
Transmission was one of my better decisions. Tremec T45 modified by Keisler. This transmission shifts like hot knife through butter and allows for the stock position of the shifter for a small block car.
Also very happy with tire selection. Mastercraft made by Cooper, they have a period tread design and balanced out perfectly, zero shimmy.
The only bugs I had with the car was worn timing gear shim, which caused me to remove the engine and change out the timing gear, also repiped some of the heater piping at the same time. I had a faulty voltage regulator and a failed MSD box. I think I may have fried these when I welded on the car when installing the exhaust system.
It took about 1000 tuning miles on the carburetors get them settled in. No issues with anything else after 4000 miles. Fuel consumption is 18-20mpg. All gages work accurately, with the fuel gauge you have to top up to the top of the fill pipe for the gauge to read full.
I did screw up and did not install clear shields over the rear fender flares, they quickly got blasted by stones.
I believe my next cobra will be a big block street version with a high torque stroker small block. Next time.

Wolf-
Great thoughts and a great build. Have admired the car and your choices since your build thread.
Please amplify a bit about the tires. What led you to try Coopers, their speed rating and what sizes do you run? Lots of guys are looking for good 15" replacements with the slim alternatives now in use.
Beautiful car and a real one-man project. You're part of a dying breed...

Hey Wolf, When the driver delivered my car (ERA 2137) he told me had just delivered yours on the way. Didn't say if you had a chance to look at it. I had the good fortune to meet Tim (tkb289) at ERA way back in 2009 at the very beginning for both of us. I now have 800 miles on mine - great experience for me too. Tim tried to coach me on starting a thread and uploading photos, but I never figured it out except for uploading to the ERA Owners group. Both your car and Tim's look terrific. Have a look at my pictures to see another version of the ERA 289FIA. They are under albums after you click on my car.

Wolf,

Followed your build and #2139 turned out very nicely indeed, as did Quick289's #2137. I particularly like your exhaust setup and the color. It's cool how each car has it's own personality, no two are alike. I really admire the guys that do all the work themselves, sounds like you really enjoyed that part of the process.

I'll have to try filling the tank on 2136 all the way up, maybe that will get the gauge to show 'full'. How much fuel can your tank hold?

Keep us posted if you start another project!

Thumbs up

Great post and beautiful car. Appreciate the feedback on your experience - I need the inspiration to keep plugging away on mine. Like you, I did a lot of body work also. The body is definately top notch and heavily constructed but if you really want everything smooth and flat and all the gaps and panels to match up near perfect - your basically going to go through a couple gallons of filler and lots of quality hours with sandpaper. When doing all the build yourself, there are a lot of moments of frustration, lessons learned and wondering if its ever going to end - but overall I think it is the greatest reward.

Thanks guys, of course one of the other fun parts was following you guys and your builds on this forum.

ERA Chas, I choose the Mastercrafts because I wanted a 295/50/15 and I did not want the BFG's because of bad experience with them through the years with my Mustangs. Mastercraft Avenger, Cooper Cobra, and Micky Thompson ST are the the same tire, just different sidewall and tread. I simply liked the tread design of the Mastercraft. They are not high performance tires with a S rating, but they are round and do not vibrate and shimmy.

TKB; I have added close to 15 gals once, put I seriously fill all the way up the filler neck and the gauge will read full.

Thanks Wolf-great information.
Years ago,we used to have a guy come on here called "TireGuy". He made a huge thread to gauge interest when we all clamored for a 15" performance tire to replace the crap BFG's. He faded and pissed a lot of us off.
Speculation came later that he was in fact a Mickey T. guy and that's what the ST's became.
We get a lot of mystery crap like that here...

Wolf:
I take my hat to you man, I know what is to build a car from the ground up, my son and I did an off frame restoration of a CJ-7 Jeep that was originally planned for 1 year, it took a life of it own and turned out to be an 11 years complete build up. So I know what you went through including the debugging. The car turned out very nice, it is a mild street version but it has Presence and character. Vrey nice.
Cheers
Lou (Basque 1)
