Turning on the fan automatically

Some time ago, the 'system' that turned on the fan stopped working so my brother re-wired the fan switch to manually turn on the fan when needed. Now, I want to 'fix' the automatic function. Could someone briefly describe the parts that are included/needed - also, can they be picked up locally or need to be ordered from ERA?

By the way, I used to be able to turn on the fan at the switch or allow it to automatically turn on at around 180 degrees - it's the automatic part that stopped working.

Any input would be appreciated.

You have a bad thermostatic switch, located in the lower radiator hose. Check the
ERA assembly manual for the part number and get it at a parts house, or they can supply it.

Unless someone has modified the wiring/dash, a fan override switch is built into every ERA after about chassis 5 (maybe even before that). Look in the back of your manual for its location.

Chassis # EXP002 has the fan override switch.

Yes, I have a fan override switch on my dash, it's the automatic part that stopped working - apparently (and as noted in post 2 above) it's a bad thermostatic switch, which I believe is "Switch, fan thermo (1980-1984 VW Rabbit Jetta: 823 959 481/75 - Page 133)" that needs to be replaced.

Do you agree?

You should check "the rest of the circuit" by touching the two leads together that go to the thermo-switch. If the fan goes on, the switch is bad.
