The ERA manual has a paragraph about undercoating and the coremat in the fenders. Bottom line is it is a personal preference and you don't need to worry about damaging the fenders. If you like the look of the aluminum, leave it alone. I undercoated mine because I wanted the fender wells to be blacked out. Personal preference.
